Job Summary

The Temp Program Manager for First Year Experience is responsible for supporting community building programs within First Year Experience on behalf of Michigan Housing. The work focuses on providing welcoming and inclusive student experiences through peer-facilitated small groups, socials, and interest-based programs. This role supports and supervises student facilitators in their development.

This is a temporary position, beginning as soon as possible for six months with the possibility of extension of up to one-year. Work is 40 hours per week, with evenings and weekends required.


Responsibilities*

Community Matters Cohort Program Management (70%)

  • Provide supervision and support to the Community Matters Cohort Program (CMCP), an in-person and virtual cohort program composed of up to 20 cohorts of first-year, transfer, and second-year students with the purpose of building community. Leading this area of work includes the following tasks:
    • supervise student staff and development of student leaders connected to the program.
    • plan and execute events in support of learning outcomes.
    • recruit students at all levels of programmatic involvement including marketing, branding and outreach. 
  • Train, develop, and supervise the 20 Community Matters Cohort Program facilitators who directly lead cohort program groups
  • Lead coordination and attend staff meetings for the Community Matters team Mondays 6:00-7:30pm
  • Serve on-call for backup facilitation and addressing any cohort program concerns during meetings and socials on weekday evenings and Sundays

Community Meet Up Program Management (20%)

  • Provide supervision and support for Community Meet Ups, an interest-based weekly in-person and/or virtual events led by CMCP facilitators, including:
    • manage the Meet Up schedule and facilitator sign-ups
    • manage participant recruitment and registration
    • supervise program development, facilitation plan review and approval
  • Serve on-call for facilitation backup and addressing any meet up program concerns by attending all meet ups on Fridays

First Year Experience Programming and Outreach Support (10%)

  • Support overall First Year Experience Programming efforts and outreach to first-year students, including activities such as tabling, Diag Days, and webinars
  • Provide event support for office-wide events

Required Qualifications*
  • Bachelor’s degree is required
  • Experience facilitating and/or programming around topics of multiculturalism, social justice, diversity and inclusion.

Desired Qualifications*
  • Familiarity with Restorative Justice principles.
  • Experience in student supervision/advising and program leadership experience.
  • Experience working or living in on-campus housing or community settings.
  • Working knowledge of University policies and procedures.

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills in both written and spoken formats.
  • Capacity to interact and work with different constituent groups including, students, staff, and faculty.

Strong knowledge of intergroup relations and multicultural education practices including:

  • An understanding and commitment to social justice education and student development.
  • Demonstrated experience presenting and leading diversity education programming to different student audiences.
  • Skills in large and small group facilitation.
  • Deep understanding of social identities, power, privilege, and oppression.

Administrative skills including:

  • Experience in program development and implementation.
  • Utilizing knowledge of current trends and thinking concerning diversity and inclusion, familiarity with issues in the higher education setting is a plus.

Abilities

Ability to build positive relationships with others across all identities.

Ability to self-direct and prioritize multiple projects using strong organizational skills and adapt to changing circumstances.

Working conditions

Requires working weekly evening hours for meetings and periodic weekend hours during peak operational events (examples: retreats, programs, socials); Coordinate with supervisor to design a flexible work schedule.

Direct reports

This position directly supervises 20 Community Matters Cohort Program facilitators and has functional supervision of 2 Graduate Student Coordinators (student positions).

This role may have reporting obligations under Title IX and Clery.

Salary may vary depending on qualifications, experience, and education of the selected candidate.

Relocation will not be offered for this position.
