The Telecomm Technician provides support for fiber optic and copper cabling, and for the wireless infrastructure of the medical center and its remote sites, in support of the University’s clinical, research, educational, and administrative activities. The individual in this position assists with IT related projects including the installation of network equipment, access points, and antennas.

Department Specific Functions

1. Installation: Install UPS units in data centers, server rooms, and other critical environments to safeguard against power disruptions.

2. Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance and inspections of UPS systems to ensure they are functioning correctly. This includes checking the battery health, conducting load tests, and cleaning components.

3. Troubleshooting: When issues or alarms occur with a UPS, diagnose the problem, and take corrective actions to resolve it promptly.

4. Repair: In the event of UPS system or component issues; may perform repairs or replace faulty component/unit to restore functionality.  This may be handled directly, in conjunction with peers, through 3rd party vendors, by coordinating the necessary actions for resolution.

5. Upgrades: Recommend and perform UPS system upgrades or replacements to accommodate changing power requirements or to improve system efficiency.

6. Documentation: Maintain records and documentation of UPS installations, maintenance, and repairs for reporting purposes.

7. Training: May provide training to users or IT staff on how to properly operate and maintain UPS systems.

8. Afterhours/On-Call: Work on weekends, or afterhours to resolve issues or perform upgrades.

9. Driving: Valid driver's license with a clean driving record. Ability and willingness to drive a University vehicle, as required.

10. Commuting: Flexibility to commute to multiple sites, including data centers, campus buildings, and remote facilities, as needed.

Overall, this Telecomm Technician plays crucial role in ensuring the reliability and availability of critical IT infrastructure by maintaining and troubleshooting UPS systems. Their work helps prevent data loss, equipment damage, and downtime caused by power interruptions.

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience:

  • High school diploma

  • Minimum 3 years of relevant work experience. Any relevant education, certifications and/or work experience may be considered.

  • Installation Expertise: Hands-on experience in installing systems, placement, connections, wiring.

  • System Management: Practical experience in managing, maintaining, and monitoring systems.

  • Troubleshooting Skills: Experience in diagnosing and resolving system issues, alarms, and faults through troubleshooting techniques.

  • Repair and Component Replacement: Experience in repairing or replacing system components to restore functionality.

  • Preventive Maintenance: Experience in proactively conducting regular preventive maintenance tasks on systems to identify and address potential issues.

  • Project Management: Experience in planning and executing UPS system installation or upgrade projects, including managing timelines and resources effectively.

Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes:

  • Electrical Knowledge: Basic understanding of electrical principles, including voltage, current, resistance, and power calculations, relevant to UPS systems.

  • Computer knowledge: Proficient in computer operations with a solid foundation in networking principles, in addition to a command of Microsoft Office for efficient data management and document processing.

  • Software and Monitoring Tools: Familiarity with management software and monitoring tools for remote monitoring, control, and reporting.

  • Environmental Considerations: Knowledge of environmental factors that can impact UPS systems, such as temperature, humidity, and ventilation requirements.

  • Customer Service: Interpersonal skills and effective communication with clients, staff, or peers.

  • Documentation: Ability to maintain accurate records, including service logs, maintenance schedules, and equipment inventory.

  • Continuous Learning: Willingness to stay updated with advancements in UPS technology and best practices.
