Position Summary Information

General Information

University Unions Technology & Design is accepting applications for a Technology Specialist. Technology & Design offers creative and technical marketing services to the student union at JMU and the units within.

The person in this role will maintain and secure a multi-site WordPress CMS to house all departmental websites, supervise student staff, oversee project timelines and completion, maintain technical equipment, and serve as the technical advisor to the department of University Unions.

Duties and Responsibilities

Departmental Web Presence:
• Serve as admin of departmental content management system (CMS), currently WordPress, and content manager within the university CMS, currently Cascade, to develop, maintain, and improve departmental websites
• Train users and manage access rights to allow publishers to effectively manage content; perform routine usability testing and evaluate analytics tracking.
• Collaborate with JMU IT to maintain effective server environment to support production/test CMS’s.

Staff Supervision:
• Directly supervise a team of 9 students in web developer and writer roles.
• Jointly supervise a team of 13–15 students serving in various other marketing roles.
• Recruit, hire, supervise, and direct employees, including the assignment and review of work tasks, coaching, evaluating performance, and discipline.

Project Management:
• Coordinate with project manager to establish project timelines and review progress at agreed benchmarks commensurate with the work. Manage progress and potential changes to timelines or scope of work.

Qualifications

Required:
• High level of experience with content management systems (Cascade Server preferred and WordPress required) for multiple website management; training users and managing access rights to allow publishers to effectively manage content; performing routine usability testing and statistical tracking.
• Experience developing and publishing content using HTML, CSS, PHP, JavaScript, SQL.
• Experience training and supervising an office staff or team.
• Knowledge of and demonstrated skill with server configuration, security, and administration.
• Knowledge of Web Development standards (W3C), and web accessibility standards.
• Extensive knowledge of Mac and PC environments.

Preferred:
• Degree in Computer Science, or related field preferred.
• Understanding of the structure, culture and missions of higher education institutions and student unions.
• Experience strategizing and placing content on websites and social media to enhance user experience and engagement.
• Understanding of web-based applications utilizing a back-end database system.
• Some knowledge of photography and cinematography processes.
• Experience with XML, XSLT, AJAX and JQuery.

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report contains information regarding campus security and personal safety including topics such as: crime prevention, the university police law enforcement authority, crime reporting policies, disciplinary procedures, protocols for the immediate notification of students and staff upon confirmation of a significant emergency on campus and other matters of importance related to security and safety. The report includes statistics for the most recent three-year period of reported crimes that have occurred on campus; in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by JMU or its affiliates; and on public property within or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus.

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report includes campus housing fire statistics for the most recent three-year period, a description of each on-campus student housing facility fire safety system, the number of fire drills held during the previous calendar year, policies or rules on portable electrical appliances, smoking, and open flames in student housing; and procedures for student housing evacuation in the event of fire along with other fire safety information.
