Position Overview

Hutchinson Campus
The Hutchinson Campus, a part of the University of Kansas, is located near Hutchinson, Kansas.  Reporting to KU through KU Lifelong & Professional Education, the Hutchinson Campus consists of 173 acres with fifteen buildings including two multi-story residential student dormitories. 

The Hutchinson Campus is home to the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC).    KLETC serves as the central agency for all law enforcement training in the State of Kansas.  KLETC manages an $8.1 million annual budget, 62 authorized FTE staff (augmented by more than 400 contract/adjunct staff annually), and trains nearly 10,000 students annually in residential, online, and outreach programs. KLETC serves 437 recognized law enforcement and police agencies in Kansas, providing basic training and continuing education programs throughout each fiscal year.  Many KLETC basic training and continuing education programs are conducted in a high risk and high liability environment (firearms, use of force, emergency vehicle operations driver training, defense tactics, and search and seizure).

KU Lifelong & Professional Education (LPE) operates in a self-supporting business environment while aligning with KU's academic, research and public service missions. KULPE works collaboratively with all KU academic schools and departments to provide continuing professional education. Lifelong & Professional Education programs serve all 105 Kansas counties, 50 U.S. states, and 61 nations. 

Position Overview
The Technology Manager is responsible for strategic planning, development, and management of IT infrastructure, operations, and staff for the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center.  Applying technical expertise and leadership, the position manages Tier 1 & Tier 2 Technical Support Specialists within the KLETC IT support unit.
The Manager position will report to the KLETC Associate Director for IT planning and technical decisions. The manager will also collaborate with other technical staff across the KU IT organization regarding problem resolution when appropriate.


Job Description

60% - Serves as lead on all technology matters on the KLETC campus.  Provide strategic planning for technology activities, including the identification, development, prioritization, and management of daily IT tasks and projects.  Develop metrics, Key Performance Index (KPI) and Business Process Improvement (BPI) to encourage performance improvement, effectiveness and efficiency.  Research & recommend equipment and software purchases in response to staff/instructors/student needs.  Establishes and manages internal service level agreements.  Oversee technology upgrades to ensure full configuration and effective operations.  Develops and oversees an effective service management process to include the utilization of service management software, and adheres to change management processes.  Ensures that service resources are assigned for the timely resolution of network and end user desktop incidents and requests.  Works with enterprise subject matter experts and services resources for the resolution of all application incidents and requests ensuring service tickets are entered and documentation is adequately recorded.  Provide regular reporting to KLETC leadership to include current issues and service metrics.  Responsible for providing technical oversight for the support of the KLETC website to include the obtaining and retaining of web services providing ongoing development and maintenance.

10% - Provides vendor management and ensures external service level agreements with vendors are met.  Coordinates with other KU IT personnel to ensure efficient employment of resources.

10% - Responsible for IT personnel management, performance reviews, competency development, and coaching of staff.

10% - Collaborate with other KU technology managers on technology issues, and participate on work groups and committees.

5% - Assists in the development of the budget and develops project cost estimates.

5% - Performs other related duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/GED and seven years of relevant professional experience OR an Associate's degree and five years of relevant professional experience OR a Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant professional experience.
  • One year in a supervisory and/or progressively responsible management role.
  • Excellent written communication skills and attention to detail as evidenced in application materials.
  • Minimum of three years' experience supporting Windows operating systems.
  • Valid Kansas Driver's License or the ability to obtain a Kansas license within 90 days.

  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum of two years' experience managing servers, application and/or network systems.
  • Possesses strong general business acumen.
  • Experience with:
  • Microsoft System Center & Configuration Manager (SCCM)
  • Microsoft Active Directory & Group Policy
  • ITIL best practices
  • A ticket management system such as Service Now or Remedy
  • Server administration.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly across all levels of the organization and to work closely with senior administration to develop and support the organizational vision.
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to handle multiple simultaneous projects and determine their priorities.
  • Experience working in an academic setting.
  • Knowledge of state of Kansas processes.
