Brief Summary of Work for this position:


The Technology Assistant understands that technology is an integral part of Student Success and Retention (SSR) initiatives. The Technology Assistant is responsible for providing technical support to departmental users and campus partners by troubleshooting problems with SSR platforms and assisting in implementing corrective actions in a timely manner.
Additional duties include:
  • Assisting with maintaining all SSR technology platforms SOPs.
  • Troubleshooting platform problems when offices have issues with Starfish, Ocelot, and any other SSR platform.
  • Working with Starfish Support on technical issues.
  • Assisting with the assessment of all SSR platforms.
  • Collaborating regularly with the EAB project consultant and Ocelot representative to stay up to date on product features and best practices.
  • Assisting the Retention Specialist with developing and maintaining retention documents and platforms to support student success and retention.
  • Launching and maintaining Sammy chatbot for new departments, colleges, and schools.
  • Assisting the Assistant Director and Starfish System Administrator with continual training and education of technology platforms for departments, colleges, and schools.
  • Managing enterprise continuity of Starfish and Ocelot service when Assistant Director and or Starfish System Administrator is unavailable.
  • Must adhere to university standards and best practices.
  • Ensures compliance with all IT policies, procedures, and standards including change management.
  • Maintain accurate inventory of systems, applications, and data and provide to ITS at least annually.
  • Consistent communication with TAC on all technical issues with a broad impact to UNCW Faculty, Staff or Students.
  • Contact ITS prior to the purchase or implementation of any new software, hardware, or other IT solutions.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:


Graduation from high school and one year in the field of technology related to the positions' role. Computer coursework may be substituted year for year for the required experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience :

  • Bachelor's degree with focus on analytics, computer science, or related field.
  • 2 years of work experience with CRM platforms or databases.
  • 2 years of work experience with student data platforms such as Starfish, EAB, Banner, or other similar data platforms.
  • Proven knowledge and experience using Microsoft Office365 software, specifically proficient in the use of Publisher, Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Microsoft One Drive, Forms, TEAMs, Starfish, SSRS Banner 9, Slate, Tableau, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize numerous projects requiring attention to detail and consistently meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work effectively and maintain confidentiality with students and their families, faculty, staff, and alumni.
  • Experience with quantitative and qualitative research data and drafting reports.
  • Strong data analytics skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work well both independently and in a team environment.

The unit engages in data informed strengths-based retention and student success practices including, but not limited to:
  • Advocating for policy changes that hinder student success
  • Using data to inform and elevate strengths-based, intentional outreach
  • Employing strategic technologies to support student success and retention
  • Building and sustaining campus partnerships
