Essential Functions (Job Duties)
Reporting to the Associate Vice President, Technology Commercialization, the Technology and Strategic Alliance Associate will serve as a resource to the Office of Technology Commercialization for evaluating, positioning and identifying partnering opportunities for new technologies developed from academic research in the College of Engineering. Act as a liaison between industry, faculty, sponsored programs administration and technology commercialization departments and support collaborative partnerships for research, intellectual property management and technology transfer.
Provide guidance and support to faculty in the College of Engineering regarding the intellectual property and commercialization process of a new technology. Assess patentability, commercial potential and risk. Assist faculty with the preparation and submission of invention disclosure documents that serve as a formal record of the new technology. Mentor faculty on developing and adhering to research and technology milestones for industry sponsored research contracts. Monitor the progress of each milestone to ensure timely completion of each phase of the development process to avoid contractual issues and achieve opportunities for future partnerships and commercialization.
Assist the Technology Commercialization department with technology scouting for faculty inventions. Evaluate the early stages of technologies to assess the competitive landscape, regulatory steps and potential barriers to commercialization. Create marketing strategies and business development plans aimed at bringing new and innovative technologies to maturity and transitioning the technology into the market. Create start-up business models related to industrial engineering and material science technologies to aid in securing investor funding.
Serve as the liaison between the principle investigator and potential industry sponsors. Participate in defining the scope of work, deliverables, and milestones. Counsel industry and investigators on appropriate Intellectual property agreements for each sponsored project.
Monitor industry consortia and industry sponsored research agreements for intellectual property, milestones and reporting compliance.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Education Bachelor's degree
B.S. in Engineering, Required
Experience Expert (established subject matter expert, 7+ years experience)
Minimum 7 years' experience including successful negotiation and preparation of agreements (e.g., technology licensing, non-disclosure, material transfer and sponsored research agreements) and working with venture capital community and start-up companies. Experience working in an academic technology transfer or commercial technology licensing environment. Experience developing marketing strategies for intellectual property.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Full understanding of federal law and policies regarding technology transfer. Knowledge of U.S. patent law and the patent process. Knowledge of copyrights, trademarks protections, marketing and licensing of intellectual property. High degree of skill in analyzing complex situations involving multiple parties, obligations and competing interests. Ability to foster and grow partnerships and improve commercialization outcomes. Ability to improve efficiency and quality of industry contracting, faculty engagement and satisfaction. Ability to work efficiently across organizational lines and with a variety of external organizations.
