Technician, Impact Lab

Job Description Summary:

The IMPACT Lab at ACC is an incubator space for entrepreneurs and start-ups looking to iterate prototypes and bring new products to market. We also serve as an advanced manufacturing training facility for ACC students. This position, in collaboration with the IMPACT Lab manager, partners, faculty, and students, is responsible for: daily operations and maintenance of the IMPACT Lab; conducting safety, operations, and training procedures for Lab equipment; representing the Lab for tours, meetings, and other college functions.

Job Description:

Description of Duties and Tasks

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • This position is responsible for overseeing day-to-day activities and services of the Lab including, but not limited to Lab equipment, Lab student staff, partner companies and instructional/training Lab activities.  This Position may require occasional evening and weekend hours to support partner and  student needs.

  • Assists partner (incubator) companies, including production support, training, and consulting where appropriate.

  • Monitors the Lab to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations. Maintains a safe and compliant workspace for partner companies, students, faculty, and other users of the Lab.

  • Represents the IMPACT Lab at functions when the Lab manager is unavailable, or at other functions as assigned.

  • Collaborates in networking events, hands-on workshops, informal discussions, and other activities designed to promote the IMPACT Lab.

  • Collaborates in maintaining an inventory of equipment, software, supplies, and materials. 

  • Researches and recommends new hardware, software, equipment, and lab services based on experience and interaction with lab partners.

  • Performs routine maintenance and repairs as needed on applicable equipment.  Arranges repair or maintenance services as required.

  • Responsible for providing training to students, faculty, partners, or other personnel in the safe and proper use of the equipment and lab facilities.

Knowledge

  • Basic computer operation and troubleshooting.

  • Basic electrical and mechanical system operation.

  • Basic hand and power tool usage

  • Knowledge of metal and wood working laboratory safety practices.

  • Knowledge of discipline related technical equipment.

  • Knowledge of basic discipline related equipment technical support.

  • Safely handling, using, storing, sterilizing, and disposing of hazardous materials and/or infectious agents.

  • Basic administrative procedures and practices include inventory, basic budgeting, purchasing, vendor contacts for supplies and repairs. 

Skills

  • Ability to maintain an established schedule which may include some evenings and weekends.

  • Effectively using written and oral communication skills.

  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with diverse students, faculty, administration, community, and partners of different social, economic, and ethnic backgrounds.

  • Interpretation of rule applications, regulations, policies, and procedures.

  • Maintaining confidentiality of work-related information and materials.

Technology Skills

  • Use a variety of spreadsheet, word processing, database, and presentation software.

  • Proficiency using metal working equipment including manual and CNC milling machines and lathes.  

  • knowledge of routine maintenance procedures for CNC mills and lathes.

  • Use CAD/CAM equipment and software.

  • Ability to learn new technology skills as needed.

Required Work Experience

  • Two years related work experience.

Preferred Work Experience

  • Experience with three or more of the following fabrication areas:

    • 3D Printing, Additive Manufacturing

    • Laser cutting and etching

    • Machine shop - mill, lathe, drill press, grinders, etc.

    • Wood shop - table saw, planer, joiner, etc.

    • Robotics and PLC programming

    • Electronics - oscilloscope, soldering station, multimeter, etc. 

Required Education

  • High School Diploma or educational equivalent.

  • Associate's Degree - Four years of related work experience may substitute for this education requirement. Applicants who substitute work experience to meet the education requirement must use additional related work experience to meet the years of "Required Work Experience" for this position. Please note that the college reserves the right to amend these terms of substitution at any time.

Physical Requirements

  • Work is performed in a variety of settings.

  • Subject to standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, pushing, and pulling, and at times subject to stooping, crawling, and climbing.

  • May need to lift heavy objects of up to 50 pounds.

  • May be exposed to a variety of temperatures, noise, moving mechanical parts, or chemicals.

  • Specific vision abilities may include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to focus.

Salary Range

$50,681 - $63,351
