Who we are  

The Department of Oceanography in the College of Arts and Sciences at Texas A&M University (TAMU) is part of an alliance of Ocean Sciences at Texas A&M that spans the Marine Biology and Marine Sciences Departments at TAMU Galveston, Geochemical and Environmental Research Group.  This alliance of Ocean Sciences represents a truly unique concentration of educational and research resources.  Our educational and research capacity is greatly enhanced by close ties to the College Departments of Atmospheric Sciences, Geography, and Geology & Geophysics, as well as the Berg Hughes Center, and Texas Center for Climate Studies.

The Technician II , under general supervision, will serve as GERG’s quality assurance /quality control (QA/QC) officer for major contracts. Monitors laboratory quality assurance systems and reviews quality control of data of analytical results before submission.  This will include data generated by GCMS, GCQQQ, ICPMS, and AAS. Ensures GERG’s chemistry laboratory is following our standard operating procedures (SOPs) and Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP). Responsible for receiving samples, logging them in and processing the samples to prepare them for solvent extraction or acid digestion. Assists with management and sometimes reporting of final data and reports. What you need to know

Salary: Compensation will be commensurate to selected hire’s experience.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Two years of technical laboratory experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of laboratory equipment, scientific apparatus, and computer equipment.

  • Ensures attention to detail.

  • Able to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Required Licenses and Certifications:

  • Must have a Class “C” vehicle operator’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.

Other Requirements:

  • GERG is located off campus and this position travels to the coast to collect samples.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science, Geoscience, Marine Science, Oceanography, Chemistry, Biochemistry or very closely related areas.

  • Master of Science in a related field.

  • More than 2.5 years of experience in laboratory settings, preferably in an environmental lab.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of GCMS and GCQQQ and laboratory practices for these instruments.

  • Knowledge of developing and editing QAPP and SOPs.

  • Laboratory skills in archiving, preparing samples for extraction or digestion, preparing analytical standards, and providing data reports.

Preferred Licenses and Certifications:

  • Experience with QA/QC processes in an environmental laboratory setting.

Responsibilities:

  • QA/QC - Serves as GERG’s quality assurance /quality control (QA/QC) officer for major contracts. Ensures lab is following SOPs and QAPP. Evaluates and analyzes the data generated by GCMS, GCQQQ, ICPMS, and AAS to ensure QA/QC is consistent with QA/QC objectives. Notifies the project manager in case discrepancies are found. Checks routinely whether the standards are correct. If not, plans and executes new standards.

  • Samples and Data Reports - Receives and logs samples. Prepares samples for extraction/digestion and writes data reports. Assists with management and sometimes reporting of final data and reports. Constructs, modifies, adapts, assembles, and operates scientific and laboratory apparatus and equipment. Uses computer equipment for controlling equipment and compiling data. Makes and records observations and measurements. Summarizes and evaluates data for scientific materials requiring academic knowledge.

  • Laboratory Supplies - Ensures laboratory has sufficient supplies for constant operation. Orders any supplies before they run out and performs other duties as assigned.
