Job Description

The Laboratory Technician II, under general supervision, performs a variety of clearly-defined

technical functions that support academic projects, academic courses, and service center operations in Zachry Labs. General areas of focus are/include: Prototyping Center that includes 3D printing, laser cutting, PCB, foam, composite manufacturing and assists with operations in the Design Studio of the FEDC. Technician will work as part of a team and their specific area of focus will complement the group expertise. Their roll will be a combination of assisting with tasked duties along with independent duties as experience allows.

Responsibilities :

  • Pursue an assigned series of processes, procedures, or work in accordance with general approved plans and procedures.
  • Construct, assemble, operate and modify laboratory apparatus and equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and repair laboratory apparatus and equipment.
  • Collect and record data. May perform data entry and associated computer activities.
  • Instruct and train lab users on appropriate safety procedures.
  • Maintain facility and common areas.
  • Maintain reference materials, safety data forms, shop safety.
  • Setup, organize, troubleshoot and maintain equipment and supplies.
  • Assist other technicians with developmental projects, including coursework, new equipment, and new processes.
  • Assist in planning and supervision of technical operations, including supervision of student workers
  • Assists student teams on project designs and build processes.
  • Interact daily with faculty, students and staff in a diverse learning environment.
  • Assist Senior Lab Coordinator/Senior Lab Manager with equipment maintenance, training, electronics and computer applications.
  • Assist Senior Lab Coordinator/Senior Lab Manager with daily duties as directed.  
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education :

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field and 2 years of related experience or any equivalent combination of education and experience. (High School Diploma with 6 years of related experience or Associates Degree with 4 years of related experience)

Required Experience :

  • 2 years of related experience

Preferred Experience :

  • Experience in Space management/allocation
  • Experience with Google Sheets/Coding
  • Experience with Website development
  • Experience evaluating and implementing lab safety requirements.
  • Experience working with diverse groups of customers.
  • Experience working in STEM environment.
  • Experience instructing and training lab users.
  • Experience reading/interpreting, designing, and creating manufacturing prints.
  • Experience operating precision measurement tools
  • Experience in setup, organization, and maintaining laboratory equipment and supplies.
  • Experience in troubleshooting and repairing equipment and machinery.
  • Experience constructing, assembling, operating and modifying equipment and machinery.
  • Experience in daily interaction with faculty, students and staff in a diverse learning environment.
  • Experience in assisting and facilitating lab users on academic or research projects.
  • Experience in performing data entry and associated computer activities
  • Experience in assisting with planning and supervising of technical operations, including supervision of student workers.
  • Experience in maintaining facility and common areas.
  • Experience in maintaining reference materials, SDS, calibration, safety data forms, shop/lab safety.

Other Requirements :

  • May be required to work evenings, and weekends as needed
  • Must comply with lab safety PPE requirements
