This position will provide technical support to the New York State Hemlock Initiative, a program in the Department of Natural Resources and the Environment.  Responsibilities will include work on environmental DNA (eDNA) approaches to monitoring for up to 3 species of biocontrol predators and the hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA). Under the direction of the Postdoctoral and/or Research Associate, the technician will perform bench work for testing and implementing these methods. This includes daily cleaning and contamination control, sample preparation, DNA extractions, standard and quantitative PCR, and gel electrophoresis. Meticulous documentation of work performed, methods, and data organization.  Technician will track inventory of consumables and notify supervisor when ordering is needed.  Technician may assist in the development of reports, papers, and publications based on data collected and provide support for undergraduate and graduate students as needed.

Direction and training are provided by the Cornell Office of Occupational & Environmental Health in the College of Agriculture & Life Sciences.   

No relocation assistance is provided for this position.

This full- time appointment (39 hours/week) and located in Ithaca Cornell University campus. The position is one year appointment with possible extension depending on performance and continued funding.

Required Qualifications:

  • Formal training beyond a HS Diploma of 1 year to 2 years, Associate’s degree, 2 years of college coursework or equivalent; more than 6 months and less than 1 year experience. 
  • Experience performing standard PCR and DNA extractions using clean laboratory technique.
  • Ability to create an inclusive, high-quality and respectful work environment both in a team setting and independently to achieve departmental and university goals. 
  • Ability to follow regulations, standard operating procedures, and safety rules.
  • Must be personable, flexible; possess excellent organizational and communication skills (both written and oral); exercise sound and ethical judgment when acting on behalf of the University.
  • Proficiency in word processing (MS Word) and spreadsheets and data summaries (MS Excel).
  • Visual concentration, attention to detail and manual dexterity are required.
  • Ability to respond effectively in an environment in which priorities change.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license. Driving background check will be required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, biochemistry, genetics, or a related field.
  • 1 to 2 years of work experience at the lab bench.
  • Experience using Geneious software or similar.
  • Familiarity with the operation of basic lab equipment such as electrophoresis rigs, centrifuges, PCR machines, incubators, pipettors, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform quantitative/real-time PCR and analyze results using manufacturer’s software (such as Life Technologies or Bio-Rad).
  • Familiarity with SYBR and TaqMan detection systems in qPCR.
  • Experience or interest in working with insects.

Visual: Close concentration/manual dexterity
