The College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking a mission-oriented Technician II for its Animal Health Diagnostic Center Duck Research Laboratory, located on Long Island in Eastport, New York.

Animal Health Diagnostic Center (AHDC) is a high visibility and high volume veterinary diagnostic laboratory that promotes the health, productivity, and welfare of food-and fiber-producing animals, companion animals, and zoo and wildlife populations. Through its comprehensive veterinary diagnostic services, the AHDC detects animal diseases and supports animal and public health, promotes environmental stewardship, and fosters economic growth.

The Cornell University Duck Research Laboratory is a research, service and biologics production laboratory located on Long Island at Eastport, New York. It is a national and international resource for information on duck disease control, good husbandry practices, proper nutrition, and various other aspects of duck production. The lab provides comprehensive diagnostic necropsy and testing services to identify illness, and produces vaccines to assist in the prevention of common diseases affecting poultry and a wide array of other species’ health.

In this role, you will assist in the production of veterinary (duck) biologics and perform USDA required quality control testing on (duck) biologics. Responsibilities include:

  • Preparing sterile equipment, media and diluents, microbiology of vaccine and bacterin master and production seed lines;
  • Maintaining the positive control cultures, chicken embryo inoculation and tissue culture; slide agglutination of bacterial cultures and other immunological tests;
  • USDA requires extensive documentation, therefore, meticulous record keeping
  • Maintaining the laboratory, production facilities and product storage facilities, inventory equipment and chemicals on a regular basis;
  • Cleaning and disinfecting work areas, sterilizing and disposing of regulated medical waste generated from production or quality control activities;
  • Animal quality control testing requires handling of ducklings, inoculation and drawing of blood samples from ducklings and sanitation of animal facilities.

Frequently used equipment consists of: autoclaves, ph meters, spectrophotometer, fluorescent antibody microscope, ELISA plate washer and reader, lyophilization equipment and peristaltic pumps.

Employees of the Animal Health Diagnostic Center must adhere to the AHDC Quality Assurance system, confidentiality statement, standard operating procedures, and organizational policies. Employees are expected to meet all of the Cornell University Staff Skills for Success, which are essential for individual and organizational success and demonstrate proficiency with all AHDC systems, procedures and policies. Employees may be required to receive the pre-exposure rabies prophylaxis vaccination series prior to or immediately after hire, which will be paid for by the department.

This is a 39 hour per week position. While regular business hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, the specific schedule may change to meet the needs of the business, requiring employees to work early mornings, evenings, weekends and University holidays and scheduled breaks.  Occasional weekend work of 1-2 hours may be required.

What do you need:

  • HS diploma and up to 2 years relevant experience as a clinical lab tech, veterinary tech, or poultry science experience or equivalent combination.
  • Ability to follow sterile techniques, production protocols and careful record keeping, with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs on occasion.
  • Successful completion of Cornell Laboratory Safety Course, Formalin Training, and Animal Use Training.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid New York State driver’s license.
  • Computer knowledge is a must.
