Position Summary

Dr. Chaolin Zhang’s laboratory at the Columbia University Irving Medical Center is seeking a highly motivated Technician B to support ongoing research projects in the lab.

The Zhang laboratory is located in the Columbia University Irving Medical Center, and is part of several departments, including Systems Biology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics (BMB), and the Motor Neuron Center (MNC). Our efforts are primarily directed towards understanding molecular mechanisms underlying neurodevelopment, with an emphasis on the role of post-transcriptional regulatory processes such as alternative splicing on neuronal differentiation and maturation. The lab employs in vitro stem cell differentiation technologies and in vivo mouse models using a combination of biochemistry, molecular biology, and high-throughput quantitative and bioinformatics approaches. 

Responsibilities

• Overall, the Technician B will have dynamic responsibilities within a highly collaborative environment to yield fundamental biological insights about the nervous system and to drive translational drug discovery for neurological disease. Ideal candidates are those primarily interested in preclinical identification and development of drug candidates for a range of gene targets using antisense oligonucleotide technologies.

They will work closely with the principal investigator, post docs, and graduate students in designing, carrying out, and coordinating research. Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a biological science or related subject area, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
• Experience with mammalian cell culture (human cells and/or stem cells) and cell biology assays, such as IHC.
• Familiar with standard molecular biology techniques, such as cloning, DNA/RNA/protein extraction, RT/PCR/qPCR, electrophoresis, immunoblotting, etc.
• Great organizational and time management skills.
• Great communication skills and passion to work in a team environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree in a biological science or related subject area.
• Background in neurobiology.
• Experience with pluripotent stem cells and stem cell differentiation protocols.
