Position Summary

The Department of Microbiology & Immunology at the Columbia University Irving Medical Center seeks a Technician B with a background in biological research to join a dynamic research lab that conducts research into malaria. The research technician will play a key role in our investigations into mechanisms of Plasmodium falciparum parasite resistance to antimalarial drugs. The work will involve assessing resistance liabilities for antimalarial compounds in the preclinical stages of discovery or development. This work is supported by Medicines for Malaria Venture, a Geneva-based not for profit that leads the global antimalarial discovery and development pipeline. The technician will also be involved in projects to genetically map drug resistance traits in parasites through the use of genetic crosses between multidrug-resistant and -sensitive parasites. This project is supported by the National Institutes of Health and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. In this capacity, the technician will be responsible for propagating cross progeny, testing their clonal integrity, conducting drug susceptibility assays with the progeny and parents, and helping assemble genetic maps to positionally locate the resistance-conferring genes. The technician will also help with testing candidate genes using CRISPR/Cas9 editing. The goals are to define genes that mediate resistance to antimalarial drugs used clinically in Southeast Asia and South America, where parasite resistance has emerged. Both projects are team-based studies involving postdoctoral scientists, graduate students, research technicians and the group leader Dr. David Fidock working as a tightly integrated team. The technician will also assist with general lab management including arranging exchange of materials with outside collaborators and ensuring equipment contracts are maintained.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biology, Physics, or related science, or equivalent in education, training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Research experience and technical proficiency in molecular biology and/or cell culture is preferred but not essential.

Other Requirements

  • Must have undergraduate university course work in molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology or genetics.
  • Position will have contact with blood-borne pathogens (Plasmodium falciparum, routine Biosafety Level 2 precautions) and laboratory chemicals (none toxic)
