Technical Support Specialist

The University of Virginia Office of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS), within the Office of the Vice President for Research (VPR), is currently seeking an Information Technology Specialist.  This position provides direct technical computing support for faculty, staff, and committee members for entities within the VPR.  This represents a user community of approximately 250 persons. The Information Technology Specialist position supports Macs and Windows computers.

Under the supervision of the VPR’s IT-Director, the position is responsible for the setup, maintenance, troubleshooting, and timely resolution of problems related to desktop and laptop computers, mobile devices, printers, audio-visual equipment, and all associated software systems.

Position responsibilities include:

  • Install, configure, deploy, and support MacOS and Windows computers using remote management tools (KACE, LogMeIn, OPSWAT, etc.)
  • Provide high level technical support for all users, including desktop, software, and hardware support
  • Provide high quality customer service and training through courteous and professional communication and consistent follow-up
  • Troubleshoot issues and communicate solutions to users in a timely manner
  • Ensure that devices are maintained in a secure manner, including software and hardware updates as well as security configurations
  • Liaison with and manage external vendors and service providers
  • Maintain accurate documentation
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent customer communications skills
  • Ability to work with a wide range of computer skills
  • Basic knowledge and skills using Microsoft Office 365 (emphasis on Outlook)
  • Proven troubleshooting skills and ability to diagnose and resolve issues related to software, hardware, and network issues
  • Knowledge of hardware and software technologies commonly used within a higher education environment on both the MacOS and Windows platforms
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to acquire and master new skills and technologies
  • Ability to prioritize tasks

Required Qualifications and Experience

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, MIS, Computer Engineering, or related discipline.  A high school diploma or equivalent with at least 5 years’ experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.  

License or Certifications: Valid, un-restricted Driver's License.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience

  • Experience with MacOS and Windows imaging and remote management tools (KACE, LogMeIn, OPSWAT, etc.)
  • Adobe CC
  • HTML, SQL, Adobe Captivate
  • Knowledge of the University of Virginia environment
  • Experience working with cloud based and other IT services in the MacOS, Windows, iOS and Android environments
  • 5-10 years related work experience

Physical Demands: This position involves active and sedentary tasks. Employee will be required to lift various weights.  Active tasks include transport, delivery, setup, shipping, and pick-up of computer hardware and accessories.  Assets are managed in several buildings on UVA grounds and are sometimes required to be shipped to staff who are working remotely.

Working Conditions and Exposures: A variety of environments, to include offices, research laboratories, makerspaces, patient care, animal research, and other areas where hazardous materials, loud noise, non-ionizing energy fields and potentially harmful equipment exists. This position does occasionally requires traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.  It also requires travel between various buildings on UVA grounds and satellite facilities.

Anticipated Hiring Salary: Up to $77,000.00 per annum, commensurate with candidate’s education and experience
