Princeton University’s Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology seeks a highly motivated and experienced individual to serve as the Technical Support Specialist. The Technical Support Specialist will provide planning and routine computer needs (including website development and maintenance) for a department of some 270+ faculty, staff, post docs, research scholars, lecturers, graduate, and undergraduate students.

 

The Technical Support Specialist will pro-actively evaluate, research, design, and benchmark IT solutions in support of the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology's teaching and research efforts. They  will also develop technology road maps in alignment with current and emerging IT strategies and University IT framework. Reporting to the Department Manager, the Technical Support Specialist will work in partnership with the Department Manager, the faculty, and the technical community at Princeton to create a superior technical environment.



  • Create efficiencies in research and administrative processes including:
    • Analyze department, faculty, and lab requirements to determine system configurations and features needed to support client applications and workloads.
    • Implement processes and metrics that introduce efficiencies and ensure solutions are delivered on time and in scope.
  • Work with senior faculty, department chair, department manager, and project teams to appropriately allocate resources across projects, aligning customer needs with longer term requirements. Secure EEB computer resources, systems, and data following University requirements for appropriate data classification.
    • Establish project priorities, develop support models, advocate for, and manage resources, negotiate deliverables, monitor progress, resolve problems and communicate with stakeholders.
    • Proactively monitor existing systems for performance issues. Develop, recommend, and implement improvements as necessary, including investigate disruptions of network infrastructure at Stony Ford research station, identify trouble areas, and install corrective measures.
  • Work with senior faculty, department chair, department manager, and project teams to:
    • Evaluate research equipment and services for use within university systems.
    • Evaluate technical needs of teaching and course support which expand to address complicated requests, such as remote access from international locations, dynamic classroom interactions.
    • Maintain databases for inventory and resource management, as well as to support department research.
  •  Manage media needs for classes, conferences, lectures, and other media events, confirming all equipment and recordings are up to par for talks, and lectures; purchase and install hardware and software; and manage improvements and maintenance of the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology department websites.
  •  Provide leadership and guidance to department, faculty, labs, and EEB IT team on Apple’s systems and platforms, including integration with department teaching and research and University infrastructure and systems. Supervise management and configuration of Apple software and products, including performing root cause analysis and providing resolutions for reoccurring issues and support calls.
  •  Attend monthly SCAD/DCS Breakfast meetings, as well as training opportunities and participate in other IT related forums. Be familiar with continuous integration; have the ability to work from and maintain existing code bases; and adhere to web standards. Have experience with Drupal content management systems, including back-end development of new websites and in training end-users. Possess the ability to work across platforms on multi-operating systems including Windows, Mac OS and Linux. Work on other special projects as assigned.


  • Strong experience in administration, maintenance, and support of the following operating systems: Mac operating systems including OS X (Big Sur, Monterey) Microsoft Windows 8, 10 and 11.
  • Experience in installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and using standard systems and software applications: Exchange, Office Suite (including Outlook) and other Windows and Mac-based systems and iphones, ipads and otherdevices.
  • Web development (Drupal 8 & 9) and maintenance.
  • A strong customer service attitude, initiative, excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work independently and to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • The ability to keep abreast with new technology such as software and hardware is a must for this position.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs., twist, bend and work in awkward positions.
