Overview

The Technical Support Specialist (Digital Classics) manages all aspects of technology in the Department, i.e. hardware and software for Windows and Mac operating systems, and provides leadership, management and support for digital classics projects. S/he/they will be responsible for the IT budget. The specialist leverages technology to find solutions for departmental research, teaching, management, and communication needs, including but not limited to effective data management. The SCAD is the primary liaison to OIT for technical issues and also attends monthly meetings, trainings and other related forums organized by OIT.


Responsibilities
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot and repair computing related problems for users with diverse levels of IT familiarity
  • Support of Microsoft Windows and Mac operating systems
  • Support for all office productivity applications: Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, etc.), Microsoft Office (Access, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Exchange, Outlook), University Business Applications, SharePoint, Apple applications, in-house applications and Google Apps)
  • Design and maintain departmental SharePoint site collection
  • Keep abreast of new technologies including computer software, hardware, smart phones and peripheral devices; leverage relevant technology to provide strategic and innovative solutions for departmental needs
  • Keep abreast of developments in digital classics; support, advise, and train faculty and students in evolving technologies that support domain-specific teaching and research
  • Develop IT leadership, management, and support for departmental teaching and research projects
  • Purchase, maintenance and repair of departmental desktops and laptops
  • Installation and configuration of all new computer systems, printers, scanners, tablets, mobile devices, A/V equipment and classics-specific IT tools (e.g. fonts for ancient Greek, Diogenes mobile app etc.)
  • Configuration and maintenance of back-up software on all desktop-computing systems
  • Set up links and maintain pathways from office to home computers for Secure Remote Access to desktop computers
  • Working knowledge of Bomgar remote assistance
  • Provide A/V support for department/program events, as needed and in collaboration with Media and Communications Specialist
  • Create and administer user accounts and authentication server
  • Web page maintenance (HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, XML, PHP MySQL). Drupal preferred.
  • Attend monthly SCAD/DCS meetings, training and participate in other related forums
  • Attend domain-specific training in Digital Classics and the Digital Humanities


Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelorâ™s degree or equivalent experience
  • 4+ years of work experience required
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Significant experience in administration, maintenance and support of MAC and MS Windows operating systems, as well as all the software applications mentioned in the duties above
  • Concept and understanding of network and firewall filtration
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office
  • Knowledge of Content Management Systems (Drupal is the preferred CMS) and Google applications
  • Excellent communications and interpersonal skills, including the ability to build good working relationships with people of diverse personalities and professional backgrounds with a strong focus on customer service and academic support
  • Takes initiative, excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other OIT staff to resolve issues in a timely manner
  • Ability to offer IT support and IT leadership in support of classics research and teaching

Additional Qualifications

  • Drupal, HTML, CSS, Linux administration
  • Minimum Apple OS X Certified Help Desk Specialist certification, fundamentals of Database Design, networking. Microsoft and Apple certifications required
  • Knowledge of ITSM (certification helpful)
  • A background in classics and/or the digital humanities is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in a University setting is preferred.

The final candidate will be required to complete a background check and reference check. Must perform job with little hindrance to teaching and learning.
