Position Purpose

Provides comprehensive coordination and operational support for research and academic initiatives for the Hildebrand Department of Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering.

Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with designated Building Managers, supports building the maintenance, repair, safety, and cleanliness for research and teaching lab space for the Hildebrand Department of Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering (PGE).  Serve as a departmental contact for laboratory and office renovations. Assists with office moves and maintenance (painting, mounting white boards, new furniture orders, etc.) for PGE faculty, students and staff.

  • Coordinate and work with the Lab and Space Committee regarding lab and office assignments. Maintain a list of current lab and office assignments. Issue key requests. Coordinate building security and administer the BACS door security for the department.

  • Manages chemical and gas distribution and inventory for PGE. Coordinate laboratory deionized water systems in CPE with Evoqua Water Technologies to maintain the functionality of the systems.

  • Assist faculty and graduate students in setup and maintenance of lab facilities for PGE Labs, currently located in the CPE and GLT buildings. Train new and existing students how to operate various analytical pieces of equipment. Interface with graduate students in assessing their needs for research equipment and supplies. Troubleshoot and maintain lab equipment for teaching, research, and labs. Maintain stock for teaching labs. Handle procurement of machine shop supplies and materials.

  • Assist faculty and teaching assistants in setup and maintenance of undergraduate teaching lab facilities. Train teaching assistants in the safe and proper operation of laboratory equipment. Train and supervise teaching assistants in performance of experiments in teaching labs.

  • Supervise operations of department machine shop Instrument Makers, Lab Technician IV, and department technical staff and IT staff.

  • Coordinates all lab renovations in concert with building manager, Cockrell School personnel, faculty members, as well as university facilities departments such as Plumbing, Locks and Keys, Electric, PMCS, Furniture, Events, Moving, etc.

  • Will serve as supervisory point of contact for planning and executing move into EDB.

  • Manages receiving area, to include shipping, receiving, and distribution of critical lab and departmental packages. Performs the maintenance of records, preparation of material orders, receipt, inspection and storing of electronic and mechanical components, supplies, test equipment, and the disbursement of supplies to the teaching labs and department constituents. Maintains a high degree of safety, cleanliness and security of all materials held within, according to protocols. May utilize university vehicles to pick up or deliver materials and equipment.

  • Serves as a liaison with UT Environmental Health and Safety, Custodial Services, UTPD, and Emergency Management. Develops and maintains building-specific emergency preparedness protocols and train staff accordingly.  Serves on the CSE safety committee and helps ensure compliance with safety standards.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Education or GED and 8 years of experience in building operations or construction project management; petroleum and geosystems trades, including skilled construction and maintenance of sophisticated equipment; and at least two years of supervisory experience.

  • Experience managing and supervising technicians or projects.

  • An understanding of gas distribution systems, construction processes, and an ability to estimate research lab renovations, cost, timeline and scope or work.

  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound business decisions effectively and in a timely manner, while focusing on strategic objectives of the organization.

  • Demonstrated excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize own work and the work of others under dynamic circumstances.

  • Ability to work effectively under pressure, maintain composure, and establish strong working relationships with a variety of business contacts at all levels, including students, faculty, staff, and outside vendors and contractors.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 

  • Completion of UT Austin's Environmental Health and Safety training on lab operations and safety training or the ability to do so within two months from date of hire.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree. 

  • Working knowledge of or familiarity with university or state purchasing and budgeting rules, procedures, and business systems.  

  • Working knowledge of or familiarity with inventory procedures and space management systems. 

  • Experience working with gas cylinders, chemicals, electrical components, and plumbing systems. 

Driving Required

This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).

Salary Range

$75,000+ depending on qualifications.
