The NYU Shanghai Library seeks a detail-oriented Technical Services Assistant. Reporting to the Resource Management Librarian, the successful candidate supports the development and maintenance of the library’s collection. The person performs paraprofessional duties related to ordering, receiving, cataloging, processing, withdrawing, and repairing library materials.  

 

The main responsibilities include 

Responsibility – 

  • Overseeing all library new material processing (books, periodicals), including arrival, copy-cataloging, and labeling. Working with the Access team on fixing material records, and de-processing materials when necessary.
  • Managing and inventorying material processing supplies (including book spine labels, RFID tags, collection labels, warning stickers, etc.). Working closely with the Access team to acquire new collection labels or stickers.
  • Supervising and training student workers/interns in arrival, copy-cataloging, and labeling process. 
  • Working with local binderies for binding periodicals and repairing damaged books. 
  • Working with the processing center in New York on a daily basis, following up on the processing and shipping of Shanghai material purchased in New York.
  • Working with the Access team on tracking orders that are purchased by requests (including regular requests, controlled digital lending requests, etc.)
  • Assisting the Resource Management Librarian with the yearly collection inventory. 
  • Undertakes special projects as assigned.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Minimum two years of customer service or comparable experience.
  • Working knowledge with Alma or a similar ILS for acquisition and cataloging

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Experience working in a bilingual educational institute
  • Familiarity with bibliographic standards such as AACR2R, RDA, LCSH, MARC21
  • Familiarity with acquisitions procedures including, but not limited to ordering, receiving, serials processing, and invoice processing.
  • Previous experience in technical services or library operations preferred


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks to meet the demands of the position
  • Detail-oriented and able to maintain a high degree of accuracy in all work
  • Computer proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet, and database software and Google product
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, colleagues, and the general public
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team setting is essential
  • Service-oriented and strong interest in working in higher education
