Job Description:

  • Leads meetings with cross-disciplinary teams of faculty and technical staff and manages all aspects of a diverse project or multiple projects, typically involving multiple stakeholder groups in the broader Chicago and national Internet equity community, faculty, and staff.

  • Manages all IEI technical assets, including servers, data stores, project management systems, and frontend visualization platforms.

  • Manages services of vendors, including the development of a project statement of work and determines vendor resource requirements.

  • Manages procurement of all hardware assets for the initiative.

  • Guides technology changes and ensures the success of enterprise-level open-source application rollouts.

  • Responsible for the implementation and management of a project management system.

  • Works with University units and the client community to develop detailed business requirements.

  • Researches new software, products, or systems and may attend vendor demonstrations, in order to keep IEIâ™s processes up-to-date.

  • Maintains project web presence, project archives and project documentation.

  • Creates meeting agendas and supporting documentation for efficient meetings.

  • Utilizes expertise and leadership skills to guide staff and to resolve issues to ensure project goals and requirements are met.

  • Manages resources and schedules.

  • Develops and ensures quality control of the project methodology and contributes to the further enhancement and application of the methodology.

  • Uses depth and breadth of expertise in IT project management to build project plans, including budgets and human resource plans. Provides expertise on managing projects. Maintains project web presence, project archives and project documentation.

  • Performs other related work as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • Advanced degree in related field (MSc, Ph.D, MBA strongly preferred).

Experience:

  • Relevant work experience.

  • Experience working with technical developers, tech design and engineering teams.

  • Exposure to fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of software development.

  • Professional experience in academic institutions and/or industry or startups environments.

  • Experience working with open source software and public data releases.

  • Successful experience leading at least one sizable, complex project, preferably serving multiple and/or competing constituencies.

Certifications:

  • PMP Certification.

Preferred Competencies

  • Ability to work under pressure.

  • Knowledge and interest in data science, public policy, broadband internet networking, and current events and trends around open source technologies.

  • Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with staff, faculty, and supervising department.

  • Ability to quickly resolve conflicts.

  • Ability to accurately monitor project progress, to keep track of effort and funds expended and committed, and to anticipate at an early stage any need for changes in project direction, scope, objectives, funding, or timeline.

  • Ability to communicate the need for changes in a timely and effective manner to PIs and supervising staff.

  • Ability to come into, and collaborate with, a team used to minimal supervision and oversight and ensure accountability for deliverables through partnership and influence.

  • Ability to persuade subject matter experts to adapt new structures or systems in order to meet objectives.

  • Project management knowledge, including a demonstrated ability to manage own time well and achieve objectives.

  • Ability to learn new content areas and new skills quickly and well.

Working Conditions

  • This position is currently expected to work a minimum three days per week in the office located on the Hyde Park campus.
