PURPOSE: 

We are seeking a Technical Professional staff member in the area of ceramics additive manufacturing (AM) and ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) manufacturing whose primary focus will be in the area of processing and manufacturing of powders and fibers for high temperature applications. This position resides in the Manufacturing Science Division (MSD) in the Energy Science and Technology Directorate (ESTD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The candidate will support multiple projects simultaneously, interact with ORNL staff, industry, and academic partners.

 

OVERVIEW:  

You will work with monolithic ceramics, ceramic composites, and carbon/carbon. You will conduct experimental research with additive manufacturing, robocasting, stereolithography, composite layup and forming, infiltration and densification of high-performance materials. If selected, you will be expected to collaborate amongst groups focusing on basic and applied research in various fields applicable to the current projects.

 

As part of our research team, you will be among team members based at the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF), the Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) first facility established to provide affordable and convenient access to R&D expertise, facilities, and tools to facilitate rapid adoption of advanced manufacturing technologies including additive manufacturing of alloys, ceramics, and composites. To improve the capabilities of this facility with ceramics and carbon/carbon additive manufacturing, you will help aid the effort to maintain ceramics and composites programs for strategic energy applications. You will perform the fundamental science to improve materials selection and processing of ceramics and carbon-based composites with traditional and additive manufacturing platforms of various and numerous kinds.

 

MAJOR DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Work to link information to improve research derived at the processing and advanced characterization levels
  • Research high temperature materials for advanced and additive manufacturing in energy and defense applications
  • Perform advanced ceramic and carbon characterization including EPMA, XRD, FTIR, and RAMAN.
  • Present and report research results in a timely manner
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements
  • Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics

 

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Master’s degree in Materials Science, Ceramic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Metallurgy, or a closely related field
  • A record of productive and creative work proven by official reports, support grant writing, and plannings.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a DOE security clearance is required.

 

PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Strong understanding and implementation of the framework for high temperature ceramic and composites including ceramic matrix composites and even metal matrix composites
  • Experience in the following areas: ceramic processing, fiber composites processing, additive manufacturing, stereolithography, direct ink write, advanced ceramic characterization, and 3D characterization of materials
  • An excellent record of productive and efficient work ethic
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative and frequently interacting teams of researchers  
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever-changing needs
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate to a scientific audience

 

Special Requirement:

 

This position requires that you have the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
