Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The Office of Diversity & Inclusion (ODI) provides expertise and leadership at the University of Maryland around equity, diversity, ADA/504 compliance, and inclusion work. The following units are within ODI: ADA/504 Compliance, Bias Incidents & Support Services, Diversity Training & Education, LGBTQ+ Equity Center, Nyumburu Cultural Center, Office of Civil Rights & Sexual Misconduct, Office of Multi-ethnic Student Education (OMSE), and TerrapinSTRONG.
The Nyumburu Cultural Center has served the university’s community since 1971 and continues to build on its foundations as the center. for Black social, cultural and intellectual interaction. The mission of the Nyumburu Cultural Center is to promote an understanding of and appreciation for African-American Culture in all of its richness and complexity. In carrying out its mission, the Nyumburu Cultural Center strives to improve the life for African-American students and students of the African Diaspora, both undergraduate and graduate; to foster greater involvement of these students in campus programs and initiatives; to instill in these students an informed consciousness of their African-American, Caribbean, and African heritages; and to improve retention and graduation rates of these students. In the various events and activities it sponsors, the center also acknowledges, recognizes and solicits contributions of other heritages. Such efforts to cross boundaries and to intersect with other campus circles make the Nyumburu Cultural Center an excellent place for cultural exchange, intersectionality, and collaborations which enables the University of Maryland to make greater strides in achieving genuine cultural pluralism. The center also hosts Camp Shule in the summer which provides kindergarten through 12th grade students an opportunity to explore academic, artistic, and athletic interests in a relaxed and creative environment.
The technical and operations coordinator will lead in the installation, maintenance, and configuration of equipment including, but not limited to video equipment, sound equipment, for instructional, student, and staff use. This position is primarily responsible for implementing any new technological initiatives for the Nyumburu Cultural Center. This position will lead and provide both technical assistance and logistical support. The technical and operations coordinator will review multipurpose room reservations, conference room, computer lab and room requests and work with the requestor on technology needs. This position will manage and coordinate room set-ups for the main multi-purpose room, conference rooms, and interior Nyumburu building display areas. This position will provide coverage for evening and weekend events held at the center and will assist with scheduling staff coverage.
The technical and operations coordinator will lead facility management for the center including, but not limited to maintenance of furniture and equipment, housekeeping requests, as needed. Serve as a backup for building access and key monitor, as needed. This position will serve as a liaison and work collaboratively with DivIT and/or internal IT staff to oversee the procurement and installation of computers (e.g, laptops, iPads, iPods, and desktop computers) to ensure the technology is appropriate for the center’s existing equipment. This position will coordinate and/or provide training to users as requested. The technical and operations coordinator will serve as a representative for ODI and Nyumburu Cultural Center on committees, at meetings and events as requested by the director. The technical and operations coordinator will mentor and supervisor minors participating in the Camp Shule. This position will report to the director of Nyumburu Cultural Center.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and / or experience.

Experience:
  • Three (3) years of progressive experience in technical operations which includes one (1) year of experience with audio, visual, and media operations involving troubleshooting solutions for resolving software and hardware issues (i.e., experience in enterprise AV environments with presentation technology, event and program setups, etc.).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Working knowledge of audio, video, and media equipment (e.g., digital/analog devices, etc.) and complex computer systems.
  • Working knowledge and ability to perform video editing and production protocol techniques.
  • Working knowledge of troubleshooting general computer related functions on PC and MAC equipment.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Strong computer and application skills.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Familiarity with ensuring ADA compliance and accessibility for video and production.
  • Familiarity with event planning and project management.
  • Works effectively in fast paced team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to troubleshoot computers, printers, and SMART Boards.
  • Ability to interact effectively with diverse constituencies from an array of cultural and identity groups.
  • Ability to interpret policies, guidelines, and laws and make recommendations to key stakeholders.

  • Ability to work independently as well as under supervision.

  • Salary range for this position is low $60s to low $70s and commensurate with experience.
  • Candidates must be able to provide proof of eligibility to work in the USA. No visa sponsorship is offered for this position.

Additional Background Check:
Child Protective Services (CPS) background clearance form must be completed for staff members working in a facility where a youth/summer camp is hosted. Md. FAMILY LAW Code Ann. § 5-560 requires a fingerprint background check (i.e., Child Protective Services (CPS) background clearance form) for this position. Required to identify serial numbers and/or part numbers from equipment.
