Job Description

The Technical Laboratory Manager provides managerial support to the Starlab ( a large motion capture facility) located at the RELLIS Campus. This includes technical supervision of multiple undergraduate and graduate students working support staff.  Supervision of the space with regard to outside parties using the space will be required. This position requires clear communication, personal interaction skills as well as excellent organizational and reporting abilities, as well as technical expertise.

Responsibilities:

  • Administers the scheduling of laboratory calendar,  workload, and supervises technical staff/student workers  in the performance of assigned duties.
  • Guide and mentor a team of students to capture the highest quality full performance motion capture possible.
  • Review work and provide quality constructive feedback to improve quality and encourage growth.
  • Able to balance work with diverse tasks and shifting priorities.
  • Manage the accurate documentation of configurations and procedures.
  • Configure, maintain and operate hardware and software for Vicon Shogun, XSens, Manus, and Faceware systems, ensuring they are always in peak health and ready to capture.
  • Ensure high quality data capture/data quality assurance during shoots.
  • Create highly accurate physical props to match their digital counterparts.
  • Assemble motion capture sets in preparation of shoot days.
  • Work with vendors to quickly troubleshoot and resolve problems.
  • Track, clean, and retarget motion capture data.

Required Education Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Science, other applicable field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Visualization, Computer Animation.

Required Experience:

  • Seven years of related experience including at least two years of related supervisory experience.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience working with 3d software such as Maya or Blender
  • Experience with the Unreal Engine and the Unity game engine

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Expertise with several of the following systems: Faceware, Vicon Shogun, XSens, Manus. Experience with other motion capture systems may be considered.
  • Expertise of the entire mocap post-production pipeline including cleaning, solving, and retargeting.
  • Demonstrate an extraordinary attention to detail and the ability to solve complex problems on the fly.
  • Possess excellent troubleshooting abilities, both creatively and technically.
  • Proactively identify areas for improvement and patiently work with our directors to pursue solutions for them.
  • Able to collaborate with anyone effectively, actively fostering a humble environment of teaching, learning, and growing within the team.
  • Possess clear, efficient communication skills.
  • Passion for technological advancements within the industry
