Job Description

The Technical Laboratory Coordinator, under general direction of technical lab manager, coordinates, oversees the daily operational activities of machine shop and laboratories, ensure adherence to lab standards, practices, safety policies and procedures. Technical Laboratory Coordinator will work as part of a team and their specific area of focus will complement the group expertise.


Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and oversee the daily operational activities of machine shop and laboratories. Ensure adherence to lab standards, practices, safety policies and procedures.
  • Set up, operate, maintain and troubleshoot machine shop and laboratories equipment to support teaching and research operations.
  • Prepare, set up and train users on the operation for manual, semi-automated or automated tools and machines (mill, lathes, grinders, welding etc.)
  • Review technical drawings and instructions. Produce precision tools.
  • Oversee procurement of machine shop and laboratory equipment, tooling and supplies. Maintain inventory supplies and records, chemical storage and safety records.
  • Oversee the maintenance of facilities, equipment and machinery and arrange for repairs. Evaluate existing facilities and recommend improvements.
  • Provide design review for students and research projects, suggest alternative manufacturing methods and design, as needed. Provide estimate of job cost and time.
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures for machine shop and laboratories. Develop procedures for the use of machine shop and laboratories instrumentation.
  • Ensure proper storage, handling and disposal of chemicals and waste.
  • Proactive communication with faculty, students and staff in a diverse learning environment to support both teaching and research operations.
  • Assist in the development and update of instructional materials for teaching laboratories. Assist in the development and testing of new experiments and curricula.
  • Supervise and train staff and students in the handling and preparation of materials.
  • Coordinate teaching assignments for laboratory sections. Provide training including equipment training, processes and software usage to lab instructors and students.
  • May supervise assigned staff.
  • Serve as backup in other labs and technical areas
  • Assist technical lab manager with daily duties as directed.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Required Education:
Bachelor’s degree or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

Required Experience:
Three years of related experience in laboratory operations.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience evaluating and implementing safety protocols.
  • Prior experience with machine tools and industrial machines.
  • Experience using engineering software (MasterCAM, CAD, Solidworks etc).
  • Experience working with welding.
  • Experience in developing estimates for manufacturing jobs.
  • Experience working with diverse groups of customers.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet and presentation applications.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to adapt to rapidly changing environment.
  • Ability to stand, walk for extended period of time, frequent bending, twisting, pushing/pulling, occasional kneeling and crawling, and lifting and carrying up to 25-50 pounds.

Other Requirements:

Possible weekend, evenings, and shift work.
