Job Description:

Berklee’s campus in New York City has transformed the Power Station facility through cutting-edge technology, all while preserving the original studios' historic temples of sound. In 2021 BerkleeNYC opened a Master of Arts in Creative Media and Technology with three specializations (Songwriting and Production, Live Experience Design and Writing and Design for Musical Theatre) to allow students to study at Power Station at BerkleeNYC, a transformed state-of-the-art audio and video production facility servicing the professional music, theater, television, and film industries.

Position Summary:

Reporting directly to the Director of Operations, the Technical Director will be responsible for all technical aspects of the facility, including supervising and training associates and staff, and acting as a service and industry liaison for Power Station at BerkleeNYC.

Under the leadership of the Executive Director, and in collaboration with the Director of Operations, Director of Academic Technology and Educational Program Directors, the Technical Director will help develop and implement the strategic vision of BerkleeNYC, especially as it pertains to technology, education and professional services. This person will stay ahead of new technology to keep the studio on the cutting edge of professional practices, and pushing the industry forward.

The Technical Director will provide leadership and work collaboratively to ensure the smooth

operation of BerkleeNYC’s educational offerings and professional studio business. By arranging and maintaining service agreement deals, this person will implement highly cost-effective and efficient systems for BerkleeNYC. This person will interface regularly with their counterparts in Boston, to coordinate the mission of BerkleeNYC and the larger Berklee ecosystem.

This person will also oversee all technical aspects of any and all future studio and technology

facilities construction and refurbishments, ensuring that BerkleeNYC stays at the forefront of technology for music, audio, video, and the creative arts.

The Technical Director may also teach classes for BerkleeNYC, help design curriculum and new

program offerings for the college, and act as a resource for the larger Berklee organization in Boston, Spain, Abu Dhabi, Los Angeles, China and elsewhere.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

● Provide leadership and take primary responsibility for technical aspects of the studio processes, including leading on systems design & implementation of new initiatives

● Interface with studio clients, both professional and educational, as to their session, technical and scheduling needs

● Supervise Studio Operations Associates and Studio Maintenance Associates

● Train associates and staff, including setting standards and providing professional leadership, guidance, continuity, and context for the technical and service staff (Customer Service Associates, Studio Operations Associates, Studio Maintenance Associates)

● Provide mentorship for additional staff positions

● Schedule training in conjunction with the Director of Operations and Studio Manager by creating systems detailing responsibility lists, etiquette, zeroing rooms, set up processes for SOAs and SMAs, and ticketing systems for computer and hardware repairs.

● Develop and strengthen relationships by engaging with industry professionals, keeping them informed and welcomed.

● Work with Facilities Manager on service contracts and other issues pertaining to the Physical Plant.

● Negotiate preferential deals and treatment for purchases and services

● Advance the brand recognition among thought leaders in the industry

● Cultivate a high-profile for the studio among industry press and trade organizations

● Devise and implement strategy for branding Power Station at BerkleeNYC as the premier institution

● Engineer occasional sessions for internal clients and institutionally-negotiated public service and community outreach projects

● Contribute to the historical project of transforming the common areas of the building into celebrations of the music industry

● Teach classes and design curriculum in appropriate topics

● Act as a resource and subject matter expert for the larger Berklee community

● Other duties as assigned

Required Skills:

● High-level technical and creative skills related to large-format recording studios

● Digital and analog audio and video expertise

● Knowledge of production and engineering and management skills appropriate for a state-of-the-art professional facility

● Demonstrated ability to lead a technical staff and identify and implement technical strategies for a large professional

● Professional understanding of deal negotiation

● Strong written and verbal presentation skills

● Deep connections with the NYC and world-wide recording industry

Required Experience and Education:

● 10+ years working in a similar position for complex studios and highly technological environments with documented success.

● Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Music Technology

● Experience with training and managing staff in a technology driven environment

● Extensive personal and professional network in the recording industry


Salary Range: 120,000-135,000
