The Safety Assistant is responsible for overseeing students using the sculpture studio, which includes: metal shop, woodshop, CNC router, and student workstations. This position ensures adherence to University safety protocols and helps to maintain a clean, well-organized shop environment with fully functioning equipment. In addition, act in a supervisory role for all other nighttime undergraduate studio safety monitors. In the event of an injury, the incumbent should be able to discern urgent versus emergent situations and would be responsible for treating an injury using supplies in the first aid kit and/or calling for emergency services in the event of a more severe accident. The position also requires giving corrective instructions and limited demonstrations on the proper use of tools, equipment, and supplies. The position is scheduled to work evenings and Sundays (Sun 4-11PM, Mon-Thurs 7-11PM).
- Associate’s degree and a minimum 1 year of relevant or closely related experience, or an equivalent combination of skills and experience
Experience in a variety of fabrication techniques, i.e., woodworking, metalworking, assemblage, maker space
Knowledge of and experience with a wide variety of wood and metal shop equipment, i.e., table and band saws, routers, drill presses, welding and manual cold metal shop tools, as well as hand-held power tools
Strong interpersonal skills to ensure meaningful interactions with student monitors and be a resource for them, balanced with the ability to act in a disciplinary/authoritative capacity when the need arises
Possesses a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive environment
Responsible, organized, patient, personable and punctual
Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and physical ability to act swiftly in emergency situations
- Must be able to push, pull, lift, etc., 50 pounds
- The successful candidate for this position will be required to complete a criminal and educational background check satisfactory to Brown University prior to commencing employment
