Job Description:

POSITION TITLE: Technical Assistant II - Engineering (Part-Time)  

DEPARTMENT: STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math)

PRIMARY LOCATION: Fall River 

REPORTS TO: Dean, STEM or designee

STATEMENT OF DUTIES: 

The Technical Assistant II - Engineering provides laboratory support for instructional activities in engineering laboratories at all campus locations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work with Information Technology Services to maintain the engineering computer labs in support of all engineering courses, to ensure that all software and hardware is up-to-date and accessible at all times, including but not limited to software purchases and software updates.
  • Maintain and repair engineering equipment and laboratory apparatus, which may require climbing ladders and lifting up to 30 pounds; and/or arrange for the maintenance, calibration and repair of equipment from outside vendors.  
  • Research new equipment purchases for faculty and follow through with the ordering and purchase of new equipment and materials.
  • Prepare equipment and materials before faculty lessons and run trials of experiments prior to classes.
  • Ensure that equipment is properly cleaned and in working order.
  • Ensure that all health and safety procedures are understood and followed correctly.
  • Update chemical inventory and other OSHA-compliance related duties as necessary.
  • Demonstrate a sense of professionalism and consistently reflect Bristol's core values while interacting with members of the Bristol community.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Requirements:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Applicants must have at least (A) one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in technical work supporting research, instructional or experimental activities or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions:

I.          An Associate or higher degree with a major in a directly related scientific or technical field such as biology, botany, chemistry, computer science, electronics, horticulture, physiology, zoology, etc. may be substituted for the required experience.*

*Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

ADDITIONAL REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated ability to:
    • Follow written and oral instructions.
    • Read and interpret documents.
    • Establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others.
    • Give oral instructions in a precise, understandable manner.
    • Maintain accurate records.
    • Operate standard laboratory equipment.
    • Prepare written reports and to present facts clearly both orally and in writing.
    • Understand and apply the laws, rules, policies and procedures governing assigned unit activities.
    • Collect and analyze data.
    • Demonstrated experience using Microsoft Office 365 and downloading and updating software.
    • Knowledge of the types, uses and operation of standard laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
    • Knowledge of the safety practices and procedures used in connection with laboratory work, including the proper disposal of laboratory materials.
    • Knowledge of the fundamentals of mechanics, electromechanics and/or electronics.
    • Knowledge of calibration and/or adjustment techniques as applied to laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
    • The ability to work effectively with a diverse student body, faculty, and staff.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated work experience in an academic/instructional setting.
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching/training students.
  • Ability to make decisions independently and exercise sound judgment. 
  • Ability to communicate in a language in addition to English.

POSITION STATUS: This is a part-time, non-unit, non-benefitted, up to 18.5 hours per week position, some nights and weekends required.

SALARY: $22.23 per hour.
