General Information
The School of Integrated Sciences (SIS) at James Madison University (JMU) invites applications for a Teaching Postdoctoral Fellow to support STS-informed undergraduate teaching within an interdisciplinary STEM curriculum beginning August 2024. Funding for this position comes from JMU and a National Science Foundation grant, “Collaborative Research: RUI: Collaborative Research and Education Architecture for Transformative Engagement with STS (CREATE/STS)” (#2121207 ). The Postdoctoral Fellow will be based at JMU and work with two co-PIs on the grant.
The School of Integrated Sciences is a vibrant, interdisciplinary community that offers three undergraduate programs – Integrated Science and Technology (ISAT), Geography, and Intelligence Analysis—as well as a revitalized M.S. program in ISAT. Within the ISAT undergraduate program, students may choose to concentrate in computing, environment and sustainability, manufacturing, biotechnology, energy, and public interest technology & science.
The CREATE/STS grant, led by two SIS-faculty Co-PIs, is implementing and evaluating approaches for using STS pedagogies to facilitate collaborative formations between humanities and STEM faculty. This grant is a collaboration with partners at Colorado School of Mines, Michigan State University, and University of Maryland College Park.
Compensation for this full-time benefits-eligible position is $51,000. We are unable to provide relocation assistance.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Teaching Postdoctoral Fellow will join SIS for the 2024-2025 academic year, beginning August 2024. Teaching will consist of a 2-2 load, i.e., two courses in the fall semester and two courses in the spring semester. The courses will likely include ISAT 171: Governance of Sociotechnical Systems and ISAT 271: Technology, Science, and Society. These two courses are both required for undergraduate majors in the interdisciplinary ISAT major. The Fellow will receive mentorship and guidance from faculty on these courses. The JMU Center for Faculty Innovation (CFI) also provides a wealth of professional development opportunities throughout the year. The Fellow will be a member of the STS Futures Lab, a collaborative and innovative space offering a small seminar/lab elective course.
In addition to teaching, the Fellow will assist in activities related to the CREATE/STS project during the 2024-25 year. During this final year of the grant, activities will focus on data analysis and archiving, the collaborative development of a book aimed at pedagogical training in critical STS pedagogies, and efforts at JMU and collaborating institutions to further institutionalize their efforts to build interdisciplinary pedagogical communities of practice. The Fellow will have the opportunity to work with the Co-PIs of this grant as well as the other Co-PIs of this grant at partnering institutions. Activities will be determined in conversation with the Fellow but may include providing administrative and editorial assistance on the book project, organizing workshops and dissemination events at JMU, participating in one or more events at a partnering institution, conducting interviews with faculty participants, training and mentoring undergraduate students, and working on data analysis and archiving activities. Grant funds will cover travel-related expenses associated with this project.
Qualifications
The candidate should have a Ph.D. in hand by summer of 2024, in Science and Technology Studies (STS) or a closely related field, or be able to demonstrate a strong understanding and interest in STS perspectives and in working at the intersection of STS and STEM. The candidate should have some experience with qualitative methods.
Candidates should demonstrate a strong potential for and interest in undergraduate teaching, critical STS pedagogies and/or critical engineering education, interdisciplinarity, and fostering equity and inclusion in pedagogy and research. Experience with undergraduate teaching is highly desirable.
Conditions of Employment
Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a criminal background check.
E-Verify Notice: After accepting employment, new hires are required to complete an I-9 form and present documentation of their identity and eligibility to work in the United States. James Madison University uses the E-Verify system to confirm identity and work authorization.
