ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY:
The Department of Chemistry is a cornerstone of the College of Arts and Sciences, and one of the largest academic units within the University. POSITION SUMMARY:
The Teaching Laboratory Specialist provides support services to faculty or instructional staff in teaching laboratories and serves as the primary point of contact for the graduate assistants and students during lab sessions. This position prepares reagents; sets up, distributes, and returns equipment needed in the labs; provides the necessary information for the teaching assistants; and conducts demonstrations of the instruments that are utilized. The Teaching Laboratory Specialist is responsible for the enforcement of safety code and accident reporting; maintenance of records of lost or damaged equipment by the students; and requesting materials and equipment for purchase or repair when necessary.
RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare reagents, solutions, samples for the use of the students in the undergraduate teaching laboratories. Calibrate, maintain, and provide equipment to students in the teaching laboratories. Refill empty bottles of chemicals when necessary
  • Daily disbursement and return of laboratory equipment used by undergraduate students in the teaching laboratories.  Stores used chemicals and equipment in the proper location after the laboratories are over.  Stores newly received laboratory materials and keep record of all material received.
  • Cleaning up of the laboratory bench-tops, common spaces, and office space. Maintenance, calibration, and small repairs of laboratory equipment. Maintains records of lost or damaged equipment during the course of the teaching laboratories or during preparation of materials for laboratories
  • Enforces safety codes and protocols on students and graduate assistants. Promoting safety culture by wearing proper attire and using personal protective equipment while performing duties in the chemistry laboratory spaces
  • Demonstrates and teaches the operation of laboratory instruments and laboratory equipment to teaching assistants, undergraduate students and new employees. Performs office tasks, participates on new employees, students and teacher assistants training
  • In case of laboratory accidents, the employee arranges the emergency treatment and/or transport of the injured parties. Employee fills out an accident report on any type of accident that occurs in the teaching laboratories.
  • Acts as contact for information and advice to the public on chemistry related questions and problems. Evaluates equipment and chemicals offered for donation to the Chemistry teaching labs and assists in arrangements for donation

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM:
This position requires high school and two years of work experience in instructional or laboratory work. College coursework may be substituted for the required experience.

FLSB1310 Equivalency:
4 years of directly relevant experience may be substituted for bachelor's degree.
6 years of directly relevant experience may be substituted for master's degree.
