- A Teaching Assistantship is available for the Spring 2022 semester for the Master of Science in Marine and Environmental Biology program at Nicholls State University in Dr. Chris Bonvillain’s Aquatic Ecology and Astacology Lab (https://labs.nicholls.edu/bonvillain/). The Teaching Assistantship includes tuition wavier and stipend of $12,600/yr. For more information about the program visit https://www.nicholls.edu/biology/master-of-science-degree-program/. The successful applicant will conduct a field research project over two field seasons examining crayfish population dynamics in hypoxic and normoxic habitats in the Atchafalaya River Basin, Louisiana. The Atchafalaya River Basin is the largest floodplain swamp in North America and the home of the largest wild crayfish harvest in Louisiana and the U.S. This is a field intense project that includes crayfish trapping and handling, habitat assessments, and quantification of physiological biomarkers. Laboratory components of the project include stable isotope and ovarian maturation analyses. Additionally, the student will work with research partners at The Nature Conservancy and participate in various project communication and reporting activities. The student will also have access to The Nature Conservancy’s Atchafalaya Conservation Center, a floating barge/camp with housing located in the heart of the Atchafalaya Basin. Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license, experience operating outboard engine boats (preferred), and able to tolerate harsh field conditions (cold, hot, humid, rain, bugs).
