Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Department of English & Comparative features eight concentrations; we are eager for candidates who could contribute to our concentrations in Writing, Editing, and Digital Publishing (WEDP) and in Science, Medicine and Literature (SML). The Department provides multiple resources for faculty who engage with digital research and instruction, most notably the Digital Literacy and Communications (DLC) Lab. The DLC lab serves as a hub for innovation in digital pedagogies by exploring strategies to teach digital writing through web development, social media, and games. Additionally, the English & Comparative Literature is home to HHIVE Lab, a center for health humanities research and teaching. The Department also partners with Carolina Digital Humanities, the Research Hub, and the Media Resource Center. All students at UNC-Chapel Hill are equipped with laptops and have free access to the full Adobe Creative Cloud suite.
Position Summary
The Department of English & Comparative Literature at UNC-Chapel Hill invites applications for a full-time assistant teaching professor to begin July 1, 2024. The Teaching Professor track is a full-time faculty position and affords the possibility of reappointment and promotion with opportunities for professional development. The position requires a 3/3 teaching load with the possibility of teaching additional courses in summer through the summer school program. We are looking for a versatile instructor with a terminal degree (Ph.D. or MFA) in English Literature, Rhetoric and Composition, Creative Writing, or a related field who can teach courses that emphasize composition, text, and analysis in the Writing Program (which includes the first-year course, Writing at the Research University, and specialized writing in the disciplines courses) or other concentrations within the major in English & Comparative Literature. We are especially interested in candidates with additional expertise in editing, publishing, technical communication, health humanities, disability studies, or writing in the natural sciences.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Terminal degree (MFA or PhD) in Rhetoric and Composition, Creative Writing, English Literature, or a related field
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Industry experience in technical or professional writing, editing, or publishing * Experience teaching students how to use industry-preferred software (e.g. Adobe Creative Suite, WordPress, Markdown) * Interdisciplinary or cross-disciplinary research and teaching interests.
