Position Summary

The Master of Science in Data Science program is currently delivered through on-campus and online programs. The teaching position is a full-time, non-tenure-track faculty position. Appointment series and rank will be commensurate with the background and experience of the applicant.

The successful applicant will have a passion for teaching and a demonstrated ability to effectively teach Data Science courses in a university setting. Duties include six quarter-based courses per year, advising students, course development, and participating in department and university service. This position does not require research. We seek exceptional faculty who engage students inside and outside the classroom, deliver active and hands-on learning experiences; and authentically support our Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) mission.

Applicants with significant industry experience can be hired as an AssistantProfessor of the Practice. The Professor of the Practice series is designed to provide students with connections to the profession of data science and its applications in private and/or public sectors.

Teaching Professorial Series

• Teaching Assistant Professors will be candidates with an MS or PhD in Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field and two or more years of applied experience by the time of appointment. A candidate having exceptional achievements in teaching, scholarly research, or creative activity as befits the requirements of the position, may also meet this criterion. Appointments at this rank will be made as a one-year -to- three-year contract depending on qualifications, where renewal is contingent on formal performance review.

Professor of the Practice Series

• Assistant Professors of the Practice will be candidates with an M.S. degree in an appropriate field of study and a minimum of 5 years of appropriate industry or equivalent experience with regionally recognized achievements or a Ph.D. in an appropriate field of study and a minimum of three years of relevant experience.

Required Qualifications

• M.S. in data science, computer science or a closely related field with appropriate experience
• Evidence demonstrating potential for excellence in teaching
• Expertise using common Python libraries and associated computational tools.
• Interest in integrating JEDI into teaching and service

Preferred Qualifications

• Ph.D. in data science, computer science or in a relevant field
• An applied background in data science at scale with particular focus on one or more of the following: neural network architectures, natural language processing, and machine learning operations
• Teaching experience in a college or university setting
• Evidence of course and/or assignment development in data science
• Experience with culturally responsive teaching and mentoring

Salary Range:

The salary range structure for this position is as follows:

Teaching Assistant Professor - $80,000-$85,000 for a nine-month contract.

Assistant Professor of the Practice - $105,000-$110,000 for a nine-month contract.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
