Position Summary

The Department of Sociology and Criminology invites applications for a Teaching Assistant Professor, beginning Fall 2024. The successful candidate will teach eight courses over three quarters (two-three per quarter). Courses will be concentrated in the crime, law, and deviance curricula, which includes electives as well as core major courses, First-Year seminars, and Advanced Seminars (writing-intensive courses for 3rd and 4th year students). Appointments at the rank of Teaching Assistant Professor will be made initially as a three-year contract. Subsequent renewal and/or promotion to Associate rank is contingent on formal performance review. The Teaching Professorial Series provides opportunity for promotion and advancement within the series (3-year, 5-year, and 7-year contracts). Essential Functions

  • Ability to teach eight (8) classes over three quarters during the academic year. Courses include: core departmental courses (Methods of Social Research, Understanding Social Life, Criminology), common curriculum (e.g., First Year Seminars, Advanced Seminars), and department electives in the candidate’s specialty area
  • Timely grading and communication with students
  • Weekly office hours
  • Attendance at faculty meetings
  • Student advising

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Expertise in Crime, Law, or Deviance
  • Excellent communication skills for classroom teaching and student mentoring
  • Strong personal skills, along with the ability to work effectively with all types of people
  • Basic word processing and computer related skills
  • Ability to use Canvas
  • Ability to listen and effectively communicate verbally with students and faculty

Required Qualifications

  • ABD in Sociology, Criminology, or a related field at time or appointment
  • Demonstrated commitment to or experience working with diverse populations

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Sociology, Criminology, or related field at time of appointment
  • Prior experience as the instructor of record in at least four (4) higher education courses
  • Ability to teach Understanding Social Life (introductory sociology)

Work Schedule
While the University's administrative offices are open Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, faculty schedules vary from term to term and are based on courses taught, service commitments, and research agendas. The University's academic calendars are posted on the registrar's website

Salary Grade Number

The salary grade for this position is UC.

Salary Range

The salary range for this position is $58,000-$60,000.

The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
