Teaching Assistant Professor in Architectural Studies    

Job Description

The Department of History of Art and Architecture (HAA)  at the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for a full-time Teaching Assistant Professor (TAP) in the Appointment Stream in Architectural Studies, starting 1 September 2024. This is a twelve-month (3-term) position. The TAP will teach design studio courses and serve as an undergraduate advisor for the Architectural Studies Program. They will also assist with building relationships with partner organizations that contribute to our studio curriculum and to ongoing outreach initiatives. The TAP will be expected to plan, teach, and administer one summer outreach program (such as Experiencing Architecture ) or an undergraduate summer studio course developed with regional partners. We seek a colleague whose teaching and service will extend our mission by contributing diverse perspectives and experiences to program and departmental initiatives.

Duties

  • Teach one, 6-credit design studio each term - in the fall, spring, and summer
  • Advise half of the Architectural Studies majors, which consists of (1) meeting individually with students each term to select courses and plan their academic schedules; (2) advising advanced majors on internship opportunities; (3) advising graduating majors on career options and applications to graduate programs; (4) working with students who are academically at risk and who may need special advising intervention or programming; (5) making referrals to campus resources within and external to the department. (6) working regularly with the advising team, immediate supervisor, and other student services staff to plan and implement advising program activities and improvements and to facilitate professional development
  • Meet with students beyond the classroom as may be appropriate to their educational needs
  • Assist the Studio Coordinator with tasks related to facilities and curriculum planning
  • Managing outreach and the application process during the academic year for Experiencing Architecture , the summer program for local high school students.
  • Developing and augmenting existing studio and digital media course offerings. 
  • Develop and eventually teach a summer studio course with local and regional non-profits and NGOs. 
  • Requirements 

    Minimum Requirements

  • Professional graduate degree in architecture (M.Arch.)
  • Minimum of 2 years experience as a design studio instructor
  • Commitment to the values of equity, inclusion, accessibility, and diversity
  • Experience with advising and/ or mentoring undergraduate students pursuing architectural studies
  •  

    Preferred Requirements

  • Professional license to practice architecture in the United States
  • Existing professional relations with local non-profits and NGOs
