Job Summary
The Smead Department of Aerospace Engineering Sciences (AES) at the University of Colorado Boulder invites applications for a full-time Teaching Assistant Professor (non-tenure-track Instructor) to teach in its undergraduate program with an emphasis on hands-on design at the freshman level, systems engineering and design, computer-aided design, and manufacturing. This position will manage and support design and fabrication needs in the areas of education, research, and administration in AES by: managing the AES machine shop; providing fabrication support for the undergraduate education laboratory environment known as the Practical Innovation and Learning through Observation and Testing (PILOT) and for student design projects; and supervising the machine shop staff.
This position will be a member of the AES faculty and will participate in course development and assessment, faculty governance, and university service. The position is anticipated to start in Fall 2023.

CU Boulder's Ann and H.J. Smead Department of Aerospace Engineering Sciences is nationally known for teaching and research that address both challenges and opportunities facing the aerospace profession. Students work extensively on hands-on experiments in the Practical Innovation Through Learning, Observation, and Teaching (PILOT) Laboratory and design projects alongside expert faculty in the department's world-class research centers. CU aerospace alumni are working at top companies and research labs, including the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Johnson Space Center, The Boeing Company, and Lockheed Martin.
We are home to 58 tenure-track, research, and instructional faculty, over 550 graduate students, and over 1,100 undergraduates. Our vibrant community of engineers and scientists tackle challenges in aerospace technology and science.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
A successful candidate in this position will typically teach 4 courses during the academic year. This position typically includes an effort allocation of 66% teaching and 34% service. Teaching responsibilities will include freshmen-level design courses (e.g. ASEN 1400, ASEN 1403) serving on the Project Advisory Board (PAB) of the AES Senior Projects ASEN 4018, ASEN 4028; and other courses approved by the chair. Service responsibilities include machine shop management, manufacturing education, and supervising the Shop Coordinator and student personnel associated with the various shops in the AES building. Research is typically not included in this position unless related to engineering education.

What We Require
PhD degree in either aerospace, aeronautical, or astronautical engineering, or a closely related field or a MS degree in either aerospace, aeronautical, or astronautical engineering, or a closely related field with 4 years of experience in a related field, or a BS degree in either aerospace, aeronautical, or astronautical engineering, or a closely related field with 6 years of experience in a related field.
What You Will Need
Viable candidates should be capable of teaching a wide range of undergraduate aerospace engineering courses in both lecture and laboratory formats. Specific areas of interest include hands-on design, systems engineering and design, computer-aided design, machining and manufacturing, and safety engineering.
An understanding and appreciation for aerospace engineering fundamentals, as well as excellent management, communication, and organizational skills, along with a willingness to learn quickly, is required.
Applicants must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills along with the ability to teach and work in a highly collaborative environment.
Candidates must be able to support design and fabrication needs in the areas of education, research, and administration by managing a modern machine shop, supervising the shop staff, and teaching students and staff how to use the available equipment.
Candidates with prior university teaching experience in a relevant field and years of industry experience in a relevant field are encouraged to apply. Relevant fields are aerospace, aeronautical, astronautical engineering, or closely related fields.
