Essential Duties Summary | The class meets in 328 Milbank Hall on the Barnard College campus on Thursdays from 12:0pm to 2:00pm. Black Lives Matter is an American phenomenon. This course situates BLM in relation to other and earlier movements in the Global South and elsewhere. Responsibilities include preparing ancillary materials in your research area that relate to the course topic, facilitating inclusive discussions, reading and organizing student-submitted discussion questions, holding regular weekly office hours, attending all the lectures for the class, and participating in the grading of assignments for the course. Teaching Assistants are offered an opportunity to give one or two lectures in the course in order to gain teaching experience. Lecturing is voluntary, not obligatory. Teaching Assistants may also undertake other tasks that are important for the successful conduct of the course, such as assuring course readings are uploaded to the learning platform, or scanning material for upload, hosting faculty and other guest speakers for their appearances in class, assisting with A/V. Finally, by the end of the term, Teaching Assistants will have gained a perspective on the content and conduct of the course different from that of both the students and the instructor. Teaching Assistants are in a position to provide instructors with useful suggestions for improving the format, requirements, readings, and lectures of the course, and they are expected to do so. The workload for a Teaching Assistant for one of our intensive courses should not exceed thirty hours a week, on average.
