Position Summary

UNM Los Alamos’ Adult Education Department is seeking an Adult Basic Education Teacher who will focus on supporting the Adult Education Program Manager to address the high school equivalency needs and college and career readiness of our student population. Under general supervision, follows Adult Education High School Equivalency curricula and plans, implements, and delivers educational programs for student audiences to achieve the goals and objectives of a contract or grant-funded program.  Advises, tests, and teaches students in a variety of subjects. Plans, develops and oversees community outreach programs. Promotes programs through community networking and recruiting efforts; recruits and trains tutors and teachers.  Assists Adult Education Program Manager in developing community partnerships. May coordinate and implement recruitment and retention programs, special events, and support services. May provide financial aid/scholarship advisement for targeted student populations.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

*Liaise between adult education students, the IET Teacher, the Academic Support Center, and as needed.
*Engage in active and productive collaboration with colleagues through department, school, and college-wide initiatives such as attending department meetings, college assemblies, and orientation activities, etc.
*Assist emergent literacy students in identifying and completing economic, educational, family, personal, and societal goals as laid out by NMHED standards.
*Act as a conduit between adult-literacy students and various social services (DVR, Human Services, food & rental assistance, tax preparation services, Workforce Solutions, job placement, childcare, justice-involved rehabilitation services, & alternative transportation options).
*Enter student data, goals progress, HSE tutoring, and advising hours into LACES database.
*Engage in professional development activities in order to incorporate best practices to instruction.

Conditions of Employment
  • May require valid NM State teaching license in secondary education in a specific area of expertise as appropriate.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
