The Theoretical Division is seeking candidates for the Group Leader position in the Fluid Dynamics and Solid Mechanics Group.
What You Will Do
The Fluid Dynamics and Solid Mechanics Group (T-3) in Theoretical Division provides leadership on theoretical, applied and computational fluid and solid mechanics. T-3 has been a national and international leader in Computational Fluid Dynamics since the group’s creation in the 1950’s. Today T-3 is actively developing multiscale methods and algorithms for exascale computing for the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM) and for National Nuclear Security Applications.
The group includes ~35 Ph.D. or equivalent level staff scientists and ~30 postdoctoral fellows, for a total budget of $28M. The group maintains and develops strong modeling and simulation capabilities in fluid and solid mechanics for earth systems including atmosphere, ocean, land, sea ice, biogeochemistry and their coupling and for weapons systems including reactive compressible turbulent flow, manufacturing and materials sciences and engineering. The group is funded in large part by support from the DOE Office of Science Biological and Environmental Research (BER) program, NNSA Advanced Simulation and Computing (ASC) program and Exascale Computing Project (ECP). Additional efforts are funded by Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD), non-proliferation, DOD and NASA programs.
The group leader’s responsibilities include strategic and operational management of the group, participation in divisional visions and strategies, promoting and maintaining fruitful scientific interactions with both internal and external organizations, working with staff scientists to recruit, mentor, and develop outstanding new scientific talent, development of new opportunities to support the research enterprise in the group.
