Position Overview

The Systems Security Engineer is responsible for developing, implementing and supporting security measures to protect datacenter resources.  Responsibilities will include physical security, operating system hardening, endpoint protection, logging, monitoring and auditing. Duties will include performing work with other members of IT Enterprise Workstation Technology, IT Systems Development, IT Architecture, and the IT Security Office. This position will report to the Associate Director of Data Center Infrastructure, Support and Operations.

This position will be a hybrid of on-site work and telework as deemed by supervisor.


Job Description

50% - Act as IT security subject matter expert for the IT Enterprise Systems and Platform groups. Liaise with the IT Security Office along with the Associate Director of Data Center Infrastructure, Support and Operations to provide guidance, insight, and prioritization of IT security initiatives.  Identify, develop, and document mitigations for vulnerable systems and software supported by KU IT Enterprise Systems and Platforms

15% - In collaboration with the IT Security Office, develop, document, and maintain system security standards for KU IT supported systems and platforms.

15% - Administer and support endpoint security applications including antivirus/antimalware, whole disk encryption, and vulnerability scanning tools.

10% - Stay abreast of current IT security threats, risks, and trends that impact KU IT systems and platforms.

5% - Act as point of contact for IT security incidents involving KU IT systems and platforms.

5% - Other duties as assigned

Security Profile:

  • This position shares in responsibility for information security by following all applicable security policies and procedures.
  • This position is authorized to use elevated privilege accounts in the performance of job duties.
  • This position is authorized to issue password resets in accordance with established procedure in the performance of job duties.
  • This position is authorized to handle sensitive or confidential data in accordance with established procedures in the performance of job duties.
  • This position is authorized to provision and deprovision user accounts and access in accordance with established procedures in the performance of job duties.

Position Requirements

This position will be a hybrid of on-site work and telework as deemed by supervisor.


Required Qualifications

  • Meet one of the following educational and experience requirements: high school diploma or GED and five years of related experience -OR- Associate Degree in a related field and three years relevant professional experience -OR- bachelor’s degree and one year of professional, relevant experience
  • At least four years of work experience in workstation management systems administration, with at least two years in at least two of the following technologies.
  • Windows System Administration
  • Linux System Administration
  • Large Storage System Administration
  • VMWare Administration
  • System Center Configuration Manager
  • Anti-virus implementation and/or management
  • Whole disk encryption implementation and/or management
  • Endpoint vulnerability management
  • Network layer security systems
  • At least three years of experience using automated tools to manage and support an enterprise class (300+ endpoints) workstation environment including Windows Server, Linux including RHEL or Ubuntu.
  • Excellent written communication skills as evidenced by application materials.

    • Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience administrating networked Windows Server operating systems including Group Policy Management in a large academic or corporate IT environment.
  • Experience administration network Linux Server operating systems in a large academic or corporate IT environment.
  • Experience with Ansible Automation
  • Experience with Python or Powershell
  • Experience preparing technical documentation.
  • Excellent interpersonal, instructional, and leadership skills in an environment of technological growth and development based on work history.
