Job Description Summary:
The Systems Engineer works under the direction of the Manager of Server and Storage Infrastructure in addition to the Director of Enterprise Information Technology Architecture as one of several advanced technicians. This position is responsible for actively designing, installing, supporting, and maintaining the Medical Center’s expansive server farm, storage environment, and associated applications and components with an emphasis on Linux operating systems. The incumbent will also serve as a key player, when needed, on implementation of new and existing technologies and projects while serving as a resource consultant for other network specialist.

Anticipated Annual Salary: $82,000 - $92,000

Job Duties

  • Play a key role and advisor to team members and departments in the installation and administration of Linux operating systems within the Medical Center’s physical and virtual server environment.
  • Plan and Install enterprise Servers (physical and virtual)
  • Plan and install enterprise storage devices
  • Actively test server applications prior to implementation
  • Offer initial training on system software, system administration, server security, tape backup and other server related items
  • Document server configurations, inventories, and activity
  • Keep servers up to date with the latest security, application, and OS patches.
  • Ensure optimum uptime of all file servers.
  • Work with other team members in the planning, implementation, administration, and maintenance of the Medical Centers Microsoft Active Directory Services.
  • Work with other team members in planning, documenting, implementing, administering, and maintaining the electronic mail system.
  • Work with other team members in scheduling, administering, and monitoring of the enterprise tape backup system.
  • Meet regularly with the Manager of Server and Storage Infrastructure and other team members and leaders to review/prioritize projects.
  • Meet regularly with other technology providers in Information Resources, Hospital Information Systems, and key user departments to share information and resources and to participate in planning efforts.
  • Keep abreast of current issues and developments in server, storage, and virtualization technology.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Manager of Server and Storage Infrastructure.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree with major course work in Engineering, Computer Science, Telecommunications, Networking, or other technology-related discipline.
  • Experience can substitute for education on a year-for-year basis. Three or more years work experience is required in the following areas:
  • Experience in the installation, administration and troubleshooting of current Linux operating systems.
  • Experience in the installation, administration and troubleshooting of current Windows server operating systems.
  • Experience in the installation, administration, and configuration of Intel based file servers and related hardware.
  • Experience in the design, administration, and support of an enterprise e-mail system.
  • Experience and a substantial working knowledge of Microsoft Active Directory. Advanced Problem solving and troubleshooting skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with SUSE and/or Redhat Linux Server OS Experience with Network Monitoring tools such as WhatsUp and SolarWinds.
  • Experience managing a VMWare or Nutanix AHV environment.
  • Experience administering, installing, and supporting Microsoft Exchange. Experience administering a Storage Area Network and/or Network Attached Storage.
  • Experience with administration of web servers, web applications, IIS and Apache Experience administering complex Active Directory group policies.
  • Experience with Tape Backup software and strategies.
  • Database Administration
  • Experience with managing a project from beginning to end
