OARnet is seeking a server and cloud systems administration engineer. This Systems Engineer will architect systems designs, ensuring their optimal performance through open source, home-grown or commercial tools. The individual in this position will also identify requirements in conjunction with principal investigators as a developer.

The ideal candidate can work independently as well as part of a team and will gain experience with a wide variety of projects. Must be a motivated self-starter and interested in working in a multi-faceted environment.

The individual will develop and maintain systems for engineering, networking, and systems groups of OARnet, Ohio’s statewide network backbone. OARnet maintains and delivers services across the state’s 5,500-mile fiber-optic network backbone to support the connectivity relied upon every day by Ohio’s higher education, K-12 education, state and local government, public broadcasting, health care and research communities.

Job Duties Include:

  • Develop and support web-based network management tools in a Unix environment. This includes AWS cloud, ServiceNow ticketing system, Nagios, Splunk, and custom scripts used for monitoring and managing OARnet backbone.

  • Implement data visualization, dashboards, usage summarization, device automation and network monitoring tools for internal and external use.

  • Provide operational support to internal staff.

  • Responds to service-affecting incidents, diagnoses complex user-facing issues, and explores related emerging technology.

  • Initiate projects that help enhance tools or streamline older projects.

  • Create software application packages and automation for endpoint support.

  • Research, formulate and refine problem statements for various products.

  • Writes and maintains technical documentation.

  • Performs security mitigation of managed systems. Seeks implementation of high security solutions for projects.

This position will be placed in an on-call rotation for off-hours and weekend break/fix support. This position offers a flexible schedule. OARnet fosters an environment of continuing education and training. Ongoing training and learning is an expectation of the role and will be supported by OARnet.

Required Education/Experience

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in a related systems area.

  • 2+ years of Python, Javascript, and HTML experience in Unix development environment.

  • 2+ years of Unix shell scripting, SVN or GIT Version control, C/C++programming, Django web framework and CSS experience.

  • Must be able to function in a small team environment and provide production support to internal and external customers.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Desired Education/Experience

  • 1+ years of high-level understanding of service provider IP/MPLS network architecture and DWDM optical networking.

  • 1+ years of AWS Cloud development, Splunk and Nessus scanner administration.
