The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) of the University of Miami invites applications for a full-time Systems Engineer III position for its collaborative research with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Southeast Fisheries Science Center (SEFSC) in Pascagoula, Mississippi.

The incumbent will serve as a vessel electronics system engineer, supporting scientific, ship-based surveys within the Advanced Technology and Innovation Branch, Fisheries Assessment, Technology, and Engineering Support Division at the SEFSC Pascagoula, Mississippi Laboratory.  The Systems Engineer III will support the pre-survey configuration of vessels and provide at-sea technical support.  Core responsibilities of the position include leading or assisting with the maintenance, improvement, and implementation of software applications used in at-sea data collections, as well as the hardware necessary to utilize those applications.  The position will lead or assist in system engineering development, equipment selection, implementation, maintenance and upgrades, and logistical support including network configuration.  The position will maintain expertise with, and understanding of, oceanographic and environmental data collection instruments, and will lead or assist with calibration of those instruments.  The incumbent will collaborate with SEFSC personnel to assess spatiotemporal variability and patterns in physical, environmental, and biological data, and to relate those data to fish and ecosystem metrics in support of SEFSC mission priorities.  The position will participate in extended-duration (typically 10-20 days) scientific cruises and provide remote assistance and troubleshooting as needed for cruises when not at sea.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • A bachelors degree in a relevant field
  • Six years of relevant experience
  • Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail
  • Ability to analyze, organize, and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines
  • Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion
  • Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary

  • Ability to work independently and/or in a collaborative environment
  • Proficiency in computer software, various ports on PC systems (e.g., ethernet, serial, usb ports), and troubleshooting of computer, electronic, and network systems
  • Experience working in multi-disciplinary settings, such as with ship staff and scientists, to configure network, electrical, and instrument systems, and test equipment and data streams
  • Experience training others and providing effective communication
  • Experience with providing remote assistance, including remotely connecting to operating systems, communicating with end-users, formulating solutions to remote problems, and generating clear instructions and course of actions to resolve unforeseen problems
  • Experience with developing standard operating procedures and written documentation of system configurations and troubleshooting guidelines
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time, ascend and descend ladders, lift up to 50 lbs. unassisted, and work in potentially harsh weather conditions in tight spaces and uneven surfaces (e.g., vessels at sea) for prolonged periods of time

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with software developed by NMFS and OMAO (.NET, SCS)
  • Experience with software that ingest and store data and metadata from multiple sensors
  • Experience with File I/O, Database manipulation, and Device I/O
  • At-sea experience on research vessels and willingness to operate scientific instrumentation
