Members of the SEI Systems Engineering team are highly committed to leading-edge solutions to platform and system engineering, guided by emerging best practices of newer technology. This allows us to manage multiple public and private cloud architectures, and to provide infrastructure and platforms as a service. Our team places a premium on helping teams to meet new standards of deployment of applications, monitoring of overall health, and leveraging automation tools to provide updates faster and with less overhead than before.
The System Engineer maintains, monitors, and further develops the underlying architecture of SEI's private cloud, including Kubernetes, physical data center storage, compute, and virtualization platforms, and presences in major public cloud providers.
The System Engineer also contributes to overall system productivity and efficiency by administering and improving enterprise-wide monitoring, automation, and disaster recovery systems.

Job Description 

  • Provisions, configures, and maintains all aspects of RHEL on virtual and physical servers, supporting critical product, database, and application platforms. 

  • Develops and leverages existing infrastructure-as-code solutions to manage, deploy, and architect physical compute resources with Cisco UCS 

  • Provisions, configures, and maintains VMWare and Red Hat Virtualization platforms, including their underlying storage and compute resources 

  • Provide platform support for applications running in multiple private Kubernetes clusters spanning the development lifecycle. 

  • Provisions, configures, and maintains block, file, and object storage for enterprise Pure and Cohesity storage arrays 

  • Leverages enterprise-wide deployments of Chef, Ansible, Terraform, and GitLab CI/CD to provide idempotent configuration management and automation solutions for system, application, and configuration needs throughout the environment on both Windows and Linux systems. 

  • Ensures appropriate system-level reporting, monitoring, and alerting for all IT teams using enterprise tools for monitoring (Sensu), metrics/time series (InfluxDB, Grafana, Telegraf), and develops integrations with approved team communication methods 

  • Leverages and creates tools with a focus on developing and extending capabilities of automation to reduce repetition and unnecessary effort 

  • Provisions and maintains infrastructure footprints in all three major public clouds (AWS, GCP, and Azure) through automation tooling and best-practice architecture design that meets demand while effectively managing cost to the organization. 

  • Demonstrates subject-matter expertise, knowledgeability, and problem-solving skills to address needs of development and operations teams in service of meeting their goals. 

  • Clearly communicates in both verbal and written correspondence to further the goals of the organization and the team. 

 

Education: 

  • No degree requirement. 

 

Work Experience: 

  • A minimum of 2 years' experience as an administrator for Linux and Linux based systems. 

  • 3+ years of experience with UNIX/Linux operating systems (Red Hat experience preferred). 

  • Demonstrated ability to generate and maintain technical documentation. 

  • 3+ years of experience and demonstrated ability with at least one of the following: Ruby, Python, Shell scripting, Perl 

  • Experience with using idempotent configuration management tools such as Chef or Puppet is strongly preferred. 

 

Skills: 

  • Proficiency with Linux operating system and its underlying command line tools required 

  • Reading, updating, and writing reusable and functional code in shell, Python, and Ruby 

  • Displays verbal and written communication skills 

  • Exhibits sound judgment in making quick decisions that potentially impact multiple systems and customers 

  • Ability to make time-sensitive decisions based on provided information to quickly resolve business-critical issues, including outages, security risks, and failures 

  • Ability to consistently collaborate with team members, other teams, and stakeholders both up and down management hierarchies

Mobility: 

  • Ability to travel to collocated Minneapolis-based data centers, in some cases outside business hours, is preferred but not required.
