Position Summary

The Industrial Engineering & Operations Research (IEOR) Department of the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science seeks an experienced Systems Administrator (SA) to support the Department's computing administration needs.  The incumbent will be responsible for effective provisioning, installation/configuration, operation, and maintenance of systems hardware and software and related infrastructure for the IEOR Department.  The incumbent ensures that system hardware, operating systems, software systems, existing/new applications and related procedures adhere to Columbia/IEOR standards and best practices to enable and automate faculty/staff functions and continuing operations.  This includes providing desktop support (i.e. email, shared calendar, etc.) for faculty and staff (~50 people), maintaining a small student PC computer lab, electronic classroom and conference room.    The incumbent is accountable for the following systems:  Windows server 2016 (with Active Directory), Windows 10 lab and faculty/staff PCs, Mac, Linux, printer/scanner support. The incumbent reports to the Chairman and to the Director of Finance and Operations of the IEOR Department.


Responsibilities

  • 50% Contribute to and maintain system standards.  Research and recommend innovative, and where possible automated approaches for system administration tasks.  Identify approaches that leverage our resources and provide economies of scale.  Procure necessary hardware, software and third party applications as needed.  Provide recommendations on hardware/software procurements, including software packages to support student affairs, employer, alumni relations and faculty research. Perform regular security monitoring to identify any possible intrusions.
  • 20% Install new/rebuild existing servers and configure hardware, peripherals, services, settings, directories, storage, etc. in accordance with standards and project/operational requirements. License/install/upgrade/configure system software on a regular basis, and upgrade administrative tools and utilities. Create, change, and delete user accounts per request.
  • 10% Perform periodic performance reporting to support capacity planning.  Perform ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as required.
  •  5% Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups.
  • 10% Perform regular file archival and purge as necessary.  Repair and recover from hardware or software failures.  Coordinate and communicate with impacted constituencies.
  • 5% Act as liaison and project lead with various vendors as it relates to technology and audio visual needs for our electronic classroom and conference room

Minimum Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

1.  Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a technical major

2.  At least two- four years of professional experience in system administration

3.  Experience with Windows Server, PC/Mac environments, Linux

4.  Systems Administration/System Engineer certification in Unix and Microsoft is preferred

5.  Web support experience required

6.  Some experience with coding in a modern backen language such as Python, Ruby, PHP or Node.js is a plus
