Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a System Engineer for the Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Technology (CAIT) within the School of Engineering. The Systems Engineer specializing in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) is a pivotal role requiring a blend of technical expertise, project management, and collaboration skills. The successful candidate will contribute significantly to the development, deployment, maintenance, and enhancement of complex ITS projects.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Collaborates with DataCity PIs and students to design, develop, and implement robust system engineering solutions for DataCity’s data sharing and application test platforms.
  • Engages in effective outreach and coordination efforts with transportation agencies and private sectors to identify and address client needs and seek collaboration opportunities.
  • Monitors, assesses, and tests the performance of both front-end and back-end systems, identifying areas for improvement and developing comprehensive enhancement plans.
  • Prepares, plans, and writes funding proposals to secure financial support from federal, state, and local funding opportunities.
  • Provides technical support, guidance, and necessary training to internal student engineer/developer teams and agency partners to foster a collaborative and productive work environment.
  • Ensures effective documentation of system processes, configurations, and changes, promoting knowledge sharing and consistent best practices.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and/or relevant experience.
  • A minimum of five years of relevant professional experience, excellent communication skills, and computer literacy.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Experience with Large ITS Projects and CAV Testbeds.
  • Proven track record of involvement in large-scale ITS projects, showcasing a comprehensive understanding of the design, implementation, and management of advanced transportation systems.
  • Extensive experience in system engineering principles, encompassing the ability to design, plan, and document intricate ITS solutions.
  • Familiarity with Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and Cooperative Vehicle-Infrastructure Systems (CVRIA) architectures is advantageous, enabling the development of integrated and interoperable systems.
  • Proven hands-on experience in field instrumentation, installation, and deployment of ITS devices, ensuring seamless integration and functionality.
  • Demonstrated success in preparing, drafting, and submitting grant proposals for ITS projects, highlighting an ability to secure funding through compelling proposals.
  • Experience in effectively interacting with funding agencies, presenting project concepts, and negotiating financial support.
  • Strong background in the ongoing maintenance, optimization, and operational oversight of ITS systems, ensuring reliability and optimal performance over time.
  • The ideal candidate will possess a forward-thinking mindset, staying abreast of emerging technologies and industry trends within the ITS domain.
  • Effective communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and a collaborative approach are critical to engage with cross-functional teams, stakeholders, and external partners.
Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD desired.
  • Experience with Connected and Autonomous Vehicle (CAV) testbeds is highly desirable, demonstrating a keen grasp of cutting-edge technologies in the transportation domain.
  • Knowledge of Connected Vehicle (CV) Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) standards is a valuable asset.
  • ITS Software or Mobile Application Development:.
  • Proficiency in ITS software or mobile application development, showcasing the ability to create innovative solutions that enhance user experience, system functionality, or data analytics.
Equipment Utilized
  • Computer and specific software.
