Job Description Summary:

This position reviews design and construction documents relating to fire protection systems to ensure compliance with fire codes, International Building Codes, and laws for new and renovation projects within The Texas A&M University System, which includes serving as a consultant to internal and external clients concerning project planning and concept studies; updating the Facility Design Guidelines; serves as a representative to the Authority Having Jurisdiction (State Fire Marshal's Office), and coordinating review comments on design documents and confirming that proposed resolutions are within standards and consistent practices. 


Responsibilities:
- Conduct plan and shop drawing reviews of buildings for new construction and renovations/retrofits for both Facilities Planning & Construction (FPC) and developer managed projects for compliance with applicable fire code standards, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 101 Life Safety Code, NFPA 1, International Building Code, International Fire Code, etc. including coordination of review comments and confirmation that proposed resolutions are within standards and consistent practices. 
- Serve as a resource to the fire protection team conducting acceptance testing for fire safety systems for both FPC and developer managed projects (fire alarms, fire sprinkler, generators and connected fire and life safety systems, room integrity for gas suppression systems, etc.). 
- Serve as a resource to provide system members' designated representatives and system offices with technical support or direction for compliance with the inspection, testing and maintenance of fire and life safety items. 
- Serve as a liaison between the State Fire Marshal's (SFMO) regarding new construction and occupancy for FPC managed projects as well as provide guidance to system members' designated representatives regarding SFMO directives related to fire and life safety. Consult with the A&M System insurance carrier in response to review comments for FPC managed projects. 
- Serve as a representative for the A&M System on the SFMO University Fire Marshal committee and provide guidance and support as appropriate. 
- Review and update FPC's Facility Design Guidelines and provide input for system policy updates pertaining to fire protection systems. 
- Serve as a resource to system members' designated representatives on project planning. 
- Consult for approval to occupy building, in consultation with the SFMO, between Substantial Completion and Final Completion for FPC managed projects and developer managed projects. Assist in identification of fire and life safety impairment procedures. 
- Consult with the Architect / Engineer (A/E) of Record and Fire Protection consultant to review and accept formal Alternate Methods of Compliance on FPC managed projects. Submit alternate methods of compliance to the 
SFMO. 
- Oversee third party Fire Protection consultant(s) for providing some or all of the FPC fire protection responsibilities as needed for FPC managed and developer managed projects. 

- Other duties as assigned.


Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Fire Protection or Engineering.
- Seven years experience in providing plans review for fire and life safety.

Registrations, Certifications, and Licenses:
- Fire Plans Examiner (certified) under the International Code Council or the National Fire Protection Association or a Professional Engineer (PE) in Fire Protection in the State of Texas or the ability to obtain within one year.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge and ability to apply National Fire Protection Association and International Code Council codes and standards.

- Ability to travel.

- Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.
