Job Summary/Basic Function
About This Role:
The IT Infrastructure Services department is inviting applications for the position of Systems Administrator Senior or System Administrator with a strong working knowledge of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. This position reports to the Director of IT Systems and Cloud Operations as an integral member of the IT Systems and Cloud Operations team. The successful candidate will have the training and skills necessary to install, configure, and maintain both physical and virtual servers that supports Lamar Universities mission. The Systems Administrator Senior will apply technical knowledge in implementing policies for system security, ensuring high availability, and building technological sustainability.
This position will provide system services in support of technical and functional teams as requested and will apply knowledge and experience of current trends and technologies to improve and automate business processes.
This individual is accountable for the following types of systems: Linux servers, VMware hypervisor, SAN / NAS storage systems, monitoring and management systems that support the University infrastructure.
What You’ll Do – Position Responsibilities
  • Install, configure, and administer physical and virtual Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers, including but not limited to: user accounts, file/directory permissions, storage management, patch management, security management, NTFS/Share management and OS upgrades.
  • Monitor all Linux enterprise servers and proactively intervene to solve problems.
  • Create and maintain documentation of system processes and procedures.
  • Provide OS and application troubleshooting support as needed.
  • Coordinate with vendors and technical support as needed.
  • Generate, develop, and distribute statistical reports for management
  • Collaborate with other IT team members and departments to support ongoing projects and initiatives.

Key Competencies:

  • Knowledge of Red Hat Enterprise Linux server administration, CLI, Troubleshooting, and day to day administration. 
  • Knowledge of Linux File Structures. 
  • Knowledge of Linux security best practices. o knowledge of Linux storage configuration.
  • Knowledge of Linux package installation and management. 
  •  Knowledge of Linux file/directory permissions.
  •  Knowledge of virtualization administration – VMware ESX preferred. 
  • Knowledge of fiber channel SAN storage administration. 
  • Knowledge of SAN/NAS storage systems. 
  • Knowledge of cloud hosting services – Azure, AWS
  • Knowledge of backup system technologies. 
  • Knowledge of monitoring system technologies – NAGIOS system software preferred. 
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities. 
  • Skill in communicating technical information to others. 
  • Skill in working in a diverse population. 
  • Skill in both verbal and written communication.
  •  Skill in working in a team.

Physical Requirements:
  • Some heavy lifting required.

Job Conditions:
Mainly Monday thru Friday 8am – 5pm but some after hours and weekend work required as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
The position hired will be for System Administrator or System Administrator Sr.
System Administrator – associate’s degree with equivalent certifications required OR 2 Plus years of directly related experience; AND/OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
System Administrator Sr. – bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology or directly related field OR 5 Plus years of directly related experience; AND/OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
