Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a System Administrator/Junior Automation Engineer for Enterprise Infrastructure. Reporting to the Manager of Network Architecture, this position will work within Network Operations & Architecture supporting large-scale, distributed, stable, fault-tolerant networks and systems that support the University’s missions in Teaching & Learning, Research and community outreach. The position participates in the daily management and support of critical network applications such as DNS and device monitoring, the integration of these and other tools into team workflows and developing automation delivering infrastructure services to the university.  The Network Architecture team in the Office of Information Technology Enterprise Infrastructure unit is responsible for research and development of data networking at Rutgers University.  The team provides services including campus routing/switching, network monitoring, inter-campus connectivity, WAN site connectivity, Internet/Internet2 connectivity and Research Networking engagement.  This position will work on central infrastructure supporting monitoring, alerting, automation, virtualization, and workflow tracking through commercial and open-source tools, RESTful APIs, and scripting tools in support of the University’s network assets and the University community.
Among the key duties of this position are the following: 
  • Interact with systems and services providing critical network services such as DNS, DHCP, network monitoring and alerting.
  • Participate in a team to scale and evolve systems sustainably, through automation, advocating for changes that improve reliability and agility.
  • Participate in a team to develop and implement infrastructure supporting automated routines to improve service delivery times and quality assurance.
  • Participate in a team to engage in and improve the whole lifecycle for both network infrastructure and supporting services.
  • Maintain, monitor and improve systems and services for NOA and Enterprise Infrastructure.
  • Automate routine tasks such as reporting, provisioning, and monitoring.
  • Transfer knowledge with other staff and researchers.

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelors degree or an equivalent combination of education and or experience. 
  • A minimum of two (2) years experience in using Using Linux or Windows automation tools in a professional setting, development using open-source scripting languages such as python, bash, and/or PowerShell in a professional setting and working in an enterprise technical environment, preferably in a customer service-based organization. 
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Professional experience managing and configuring monitoring and alerting systems.
  • Professional experience with container technologies, cloud services, virtualization, or automation frameworks such as Ansible, Salt, Chef or Puppet.
  • Professional experience with source code management such as git and SVN.
  • Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate accurate and succinct reports of a technical nature to senior staff.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities and a large volume of technical problem resolution.
  • Ability to quickly learn, apply and document new technical knowledge and procedures.
  • Ability to work well with peers and senior staff in a team oriented, cooperative spirit.
  • Comfortable working independently and owning a project, as well as working as part of a team.
  • Demonstrate curiosity and a desire to learn. 
Preferred Qualifications
  • Degree in a related field such as Information Technology, Engineering or Computer science.
