Updated: about 1 month ago

What You Will Do

A position is available (starting in October 2020) for a highly talented and motivated postdoctoral researcher to engage in a synthetic biology research project. The first is directed at the engineering of organisms for the direct real-time observation of gene expression. The effort involves further development of tools and techniques for genome engineering of strains bearing unnatural nucleotides and the engineering of proteins with novel capacities to accept and maintain them. The successful candidate will do this work in collaboration with a team of Ph.D. staff scientists with expertise in the areas of organic synthesis, RNA/protein biochemistry, bioinformatics and protein engineering.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Strong oral and written communication skills to present and summarize research results.

  • Strong background in DNA techniques including cloning and genome manipulations.

  • Ability to manage time and see tasks to completion.

  • Experience with protein expression and purification.

  • Understanding of microbial metabolism and enzyme catalysis.

  • Experience with analytical techniques, such as, HPLC, mass-spectrometry and fluorescence spectroscopy.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Independence and drive to assimilate the state-of the-art and synthesize novel research directions, techniques or ideas.

  • Special consideration will be given to those with experience working with RNA and/or experience in protein engineering.

Education:

Ph.D. in experimental biochemistry/molecular biology or related field, with the requisite research experience and a strong publication record.

Note to Applicants:

Postdoctoral positions are for two years, with a third year possible, contingent on exemplary performance. More information about the postdoctoral research program at Los Alamos National Laboratory is available at ( http://www.lanl.gov/careers/career-options/postdoctoral-research/postdoc-program/index.php ). Salary is commensurate with experience. Outstanding candidates may be considered for a Director’s Fellowship, or a J. Robert Oppenheimer Fellowship.
