Job Summary/Basic Function
The Swope Art Museum seeks a creative, organized, and dependable Education Assistant to support the Department of Education and Community Engagement. This part-time Federal Work-Study position will assist with short- and long-term educational programs, community engagement initiatives, research, administrative projects, and day-to-day program operations. Working directly with the Director of Education and Community Engagement, the Education Assistant will help prepare and facilitate museum programs, organize educational resources and supplies, support gallery and classroom content development, assist with volunteer engagement, and contribute to special projects that expand access to and engagement with the Museums collection and programs.
Specific Responsibilities
Work Schedule
  • Up to 10 hours per week, in accordance with the student’s Federal Work-Study award and applicable employment requirements.
  • Some evening and/or Saturday availability may be required depending on program and event schedules.

Preferred Relevant Education and Experience
  • Coursework or demonstrated interest in art, art education, museum studies, education, arts administration, psychology, community engagement, or a related field preferred.
  • Previous experience working with children, youth, students, or community audiences preferred.
  • Familiarity with art education, museum education, classroom instruction, program facilitation, or educational content development.
  • Comfortable conducting basic research and working with digital files, spreadsheets, and online resources.
  • Must be able to successfully complete a criminal background check.

  • Experience in a museum, gallery, arts organization, school, nonprofit, or community-based organization.
  • Experience facilitating art-making activities or educational programs.
  • Familiarity with contemporary art, art history, museum collections, or visual literacy.
  • Experience working with diverse audiences and/or individuals with varying learning styles and abilities.
  • Experience with Canva, Google Workspace, Adobe Creative Cloud, or other design and communication platforms is a plus.

Job Duties


Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Primary Responsibilities occur mainly at 25 S 7th St, Terre Haute, IN 47807 and include:
  • Assist with the preparation, implementation, and facilitation of gallery, classroom, outreach, and community programs.
  • Prepare art-making supplies, educational materials, activity kits, demonstrations, and project examples for programs and classes.
  • Help organize and maintain education materials, supplies, equipment, and teaching resources.
  • Assist with program setup, cleanup, and organization before and after educational activities.
  • Support the development of age-appropriate and accessible learning experiences for a variety of audiences and ability levels.
  • Research artists, artworks, educational practices, community resources, and other relevant topics to support museum programming and interpretation.
  • Assist with developing creative, inclusive, and accessible ways for visitors to engage with the Museum’s collection and exhibitions.
  • Track and update digital inventories of education supplies, resources, and program materials.
  • Assist with maintaining program records, attendance information, evaluations, and other program data.
  • Assist with volunteer recruitment, communication, scheduling, and outreach.
  • Support communication with volunteers, teaching artists, educators, and community partners as directed.
  • Assist with outreach efforts and the promotion of education and community engagement opportunities.
  • Help identify and research potential community resources, partnerships, and engagement opportunities.
  • Occasional local travel may be required for outreach programs and community events.

Other Duties
  • Provide general support as assigned.
  • Perform other duties related to museum education, public programming, and community engagement as needed.
