Come explore what sustainability in action means to you! The vision of a sustainable world is within reach, but it will take all of our talents and unique strengths to accomplish. We hope that students from across disciplines, backgrounds, and approaches will apply for this summer sustainability internship program.

This summer, we are hiring students for paid, in-person internships across six different projects at the Franklin Environmental Center at Hillcrest. Below you will find a list of available positions.

We will be conducting interviews on a rolling basis and decisions will be made by Friday, April 14th; those hired will begin work on Monday, June 5.

Sustainability Communications

Hiring: 3 Interns working with Tara Federoff, Sustainability Specialist

These students will work on creating engaging content to help promote sustainability initiatives and programs around Middlebury and beyond. These students will work on social media production and management, the FECH newsletter, and communications more broadly and will focus on specific Environmental Affairs campaigns including but not limited to: Energy 2028, Planet Forward, and SSL.

In the cover letter for this position, please be sure to include any relevant experience in communications that you have had previously. In addition, please include any specific project ideas/topics that you are interested in pursuing as part of this internship.

Living Buildings Challenge Internship Application

Hiring: 2 Interns working with Jack Byrne, Dean of Sustainability and Environmental Affairs

The Living Building Challenge is a set of performance based standards and challenges aimed at making buildings and campuses more sustainable, just and healthy. Middlebury is piloting the LBC with the design and planning of a new student center. The students working on this project are critical to the planning and certification process. Some background in sustainable design and construction standards, e.g., LEED or LBC, or any related topics preferred but not required.

In the cover letter for this position, please share any experience or class work that you have with sustainable design and construction standards, e.g., LEED or LBC, or any related experience you have with those topics. In addition, please share any observations or thoughts you have about how Middlebury can make its built environment more sustainable and equitable for all students, staff, and faculty, particularly BIPOC community members.

Consumption Focus: Waste Minimization and Recycling Internship Application

Hiring: 1 Intern working with Tara Federoff, Sustainability Specialist

Students will focus on awareness and behavioral change surrounding consumption with the goal of minimizing waste on campus and beyond. With this in mind, students will also work with the campus recycling center to review where we’ve been and where we are going and create ongoing education and awareness campaigns for campus.

In the cover letter for this position, please share any suggestions on consumption and waste minimization that you have observed on campus and/or your community. In addition, please share any project ideas/topics that you are interested in pursuing as part of this internship. Finally, if you happen to have any experience in turning quantitative data into visualizations that summarize and provide insight into what the data is about, please include that experience as well.

Campus Tree Map

Hiring: 1 Intern working with Tim Parson, Middlebury College Horticulturist

Maintaining and growing an urban forest requires knowledge of our arboreal friends. Help update our campus tree map! Walk the grounds measuring all of our trees and doing health assessments. GIS and Tree Identification skills helpful, ability to hug over 2400 individual trees required.

Sustainability Abroad & Global Partnerships for Sustainability Internship Application

Hiring: 1 Intern working with Stacey Thebodo, Associate Director, International Programs & Sophia Calvi, Director of Programs, Sustainability & Environmental Affairs

Working part-time with the Study Abroad Office, this project aims to create sustainability practices and programming for students studying abroad such as pre-departure materials as well as study abroad guides. In addition, the intern will work in Environmental Affairs on building out the Global Partnerships for Sustainability (GPS) program at Middlebury. Vermont Climate Observatory Feasibility Study and Business Plan
Hiring: 1 intern to work with Mike Roy, from the Climate Economy Action Center of Addison County (CEAC) and Minna Brown, Director of the Climate Action Capacity Project.
The idea of the proposed Vermont Climate Observatory is to create a space to bring together Vermont-relevant climate information, including news, announcements, stories, events, funding opportunities, as well as a guide to organizations that are engaged in this work.
The project for this summer is to explore whether there is sufficiently broad and deep interest in such a resource, and if so, develop a plan that clearly defines the service, the platform, the participants and their roles in the development and maintenance of the observatory, and a plan of work for developing, launching, growing, and maintaining this resource.
In the cover letter for this internship, please share your interest and/or experience in climate communications, as well as any experience you have with research in support of product development. Familiarity with project management methodologies (e.g. design thinking) that involve community engagement welcome, but not necessary.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

We seek students who are creative, passionate, team-players. Must be excited about sharing information about sustainability efforts around the community.
EXPERIENCE:

No Experience necessary; the Sustainability Solutions Lab will provide any background information and training needed to complete projects in a meaningful manner.

PARAMETERS:

  • 30 hours a week for 8 weeks in person on the Middlebury campus
  • Beginning Monday, June 5th – Friday, July 28th.
  • Paid Internship, Level B.

  • The SSL program consists of: Weekly cohort team meetings, an off-campus reading circle, professional development opportunities, weekly hours at the Knoll, a biweekly speaker series, potential field trips

Franklin Environmental Center will be the base of operations for these positions, with frequent events and daily engagement with the Environmental Affairs team. The cohort will live together at Weybridge House and have weekly shared meals.

BACKGROUND:
About Middlebury College Franklin Environmental Center at Hillcrest:
FECH develops, implements, and supports sustainability initiatives that achieve environmental, social, and economic goals throughout the campus community, College operations, and the community at large. The office works in many different ways, from supporting independent student research projects to helping administrators and facilities staff with green campus infrastructure, such as the biomass gasification plant, as well as providing faculty workshops on integrating sustainability into the curriculum.


Requirements



Student Employment Eligibility:

Unless restricted by certain visa status, all students with an active status for the semester are eligible for jobs on campus.

Students on leave or withdrawn are not eligible to work in student employment positions until the semester in which they return. If you are currently withdrawn or on leave you are eligible to be employed in staff positions.

Some may be restricted due to financial aid status. International students (non-resident aliens) may not work off campus unless they have applied for and received work authorization from the United States government. (An F-1 visa does not give work authorization.) Off campus work study positions are available only to U.S. citizens on financial aid with a federal work study component.

Student are not eligible to work remotely from International locations.




Hour Limitations:

All student employees are limited to working no more than 20 hours per week in on campus jobs during the academic year (this includes exam periods). The only exception is when there is a full week when school is not in session. Specifically: February recess, Spring recess, and full weeks of December or summer recess. During these time periods only, students can work up to 40 hours per week. International Students: Visa restrictions prohibit international students from exceeding 20 hours of work per academic calendar week.
